moar from the WaPo article

Remember that Operation RUSTY morphed into the CIA and the BND. RUSTY used former Nazi / German intel personnel who had 'surrendered' to US troops at the end of WW2.

WaPo fails to mention that in this article, acting instead as if this was some unlikely alliance between US & Germany.

Excerpt in pic related shows that Russia (or a Russian) was involved, too. Operation RUSTY made use of Soviet spies by bringing so called friendlies into the operation, recruited by Russian speaking Germans in the group.

In fact, the overall Project was codenamed KEYSTONE. It encompassed operations RUSTY and BOLERO which were the units overseen by German Reinhard Gehlen and Hermann Baun, respectively.

Crypto was likely developed by them at the behest of Allen Dulles or perhaps an army officer like Colonel Boker, Bedell-Smith OR it is a cover story for this very project.
