Michael K. Atkinson

He worked for the United States Department of Justice for about 15 years before becoming the second Inspector General of the Intelligence Community.

He assumed office on May 17, 2018.

The Inspector General, who is appointed by the President subject to Senate confirmation, reports to the Attorney General and Congress.

Presidentially appointed IGs can only be removed, or terminated, from their positions by the President of the United States, whereas designated inspectors general can be terminated by the agency head. However, in both cases Congress must be notified of the termination, removal, or reassignment.
