Wired Magazine Is Sold to N.Y. Publishing Firm

SAN FRANCISCO —

Wired magazine, the splashy but financially struggling chronicler of the computer age, has been acquired by the publisher of the New Yorker, GQ and Vanity Fair in a deal reportedly worth about $80 million.

The sale caps a lengthy search by Wired’s publishers for a buyer and comes just a few months after the monthly magazine–known as much for its eye-watering graphics as for its technology-worshiping editorial bent–celebrated its fifth anniversary.

Breaking: Northam’s Gun Ban Bill Rejected By Senate Committee

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam’s sweeping gun, magazine, and suppressor ban was defeated in the state senate’s Judiciary Committee Monday morning in front of a crowd of gun owners and Second Amendment supporters. Four Democrats joined every Republican on the committee in rejecting HB961, which had narrowly advanced out of the House of Delegates just before a legislative deadline last week.

Committee chairman John Edwards joined fellow Democrats Chap Petersen, Creigh Deeds, Scott Surovell, and every Republican on the committee to send the bill to the Virginia Crime Commission for further study, which kills the bill’s chances for this legislative session.

Spain: European Court Approves Summary Deportations of Illegal Migrants

The Strasbourg-based court — which has jurisdiction over 47 European countries, and whose rulings are binding on all 27 member states of the European Union — ruled that in order for migrants to benefit from certain human rights protections, such as access to lawyers, interpreters and the right to remain in Europe, they must first enter European territory in a legal, as opposed to an illegal, manner.

The ruling is being viewed as a major victory for those who believe that sovereign nation states have the right to decide who is and is not allowed to enter their territory.

"The ECHR's ruling determines that a nation state has the right to defend its borders. Energy Department shakes up cyber leadership with appointment of ex-NSA official

Department of Energy officials have tapped a veteran of the National Security Agency to be the department’s top cyber official and lead an office that helps protect U.S. industry from hacking threats.

In a message to department staff Thursday reviewed by CyberScoop, Secretary of Energy Dan Brouillette said Alexander Gates’ decades of experience in signals intelligence and cyber operations would be critical in running the department’s Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security and Emergency Response.

Gates replaces Karen Evans, a former Office of Management and Budget official and DOE chief information officer, who was sworn in as assistant secretary of Energy for cybersecurity, energy security and emergency response in September 2018. Gates will have “delegated authority” to lead the cybersecurity office, meaning he can do so without being a Senate-confirmed assistant secretary.

James Woods reminded President Donald Trump about using an innocuous quote that triggered Twitter into suspending his account last year.

The conservative actor warned the president in a tweet early Monday that he had used the same quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson that resulted in the censorship and even removal of his tweet in April 2019.

“Surely you remember that I was banned from #Twitter almost a year for paraphrasing this exact quote of Emerson’s, Mr. President,” Woods wrote, responding to Trump’s tweet over the weekend that set the phrase “you are not a king” trending on social media.

China’s power consumption plunges as coronavirus pandemic shutters factories; economic numbers certain to plunge next

Several analysts have been keeping an eye on China’s internal economic activity as another way of gauging how severe the coronavirus spread really is and how drastic the government’s actions are to contain it.

Over the past few days, these analysts have been able to piece together a number of indicators suggesting that a) the spread of the virus is much more profound and widespread than the government in Beijing is saying; and b) mass quarantines and other actions aimed at controlling population movement are having such a significant negative impact on economic activity that the demand for power needed by factories and other business enterprises has fallen off dramatically.

As reported by The Epoch Times, industrial power demand in China this year could fall off by as much as 73 billion kilowatt towers, according to IHS Markit, due to fallout from the coronavirus that has prevented scores of workers from returning to their jobs.

The decline only accounts for about 1.5 percent of all industrial power consumption in China, the paper said. But because the country is so big and so heavily populated, a small drop-off in production like that is still more equal to the power consumption of small countries like Chile. Also, it shows just how vast the coronavirus spread has been and what an impact it really has had on the economy overall.

Pompeo blasts corruption, promotes U.S. business in Africa trip

LUANDA (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo denounced corruption and touted American business on Monday during the second leg of an African tour in Angola, where the government is seeking to claw back billions of dollars looted from state coffers.

Pompeo is aiming to promote U.S. investment as an alternative to Chinese loans while assuaging concerns over a planned U.S military withdrawal and the expansion of visa restrictions targeting four African countries.

In Angola’s capital Luanda, Pompeo met with President Joao Lourenco, who took office in 2017 promising wide-ranging economic reforms and a crackdown on the endemic graft that marked his predecessor Jose Eduardo dos Santos’ four-decade rule.
