Ursula von der Leyen is a German politician and the President of the European Commission since 1 December 2019. She served in the federal government of Germany from 2005 to 2019 as the longest-serving member of Angela Merkel's cabinet.

Von der Leyen was born in 1958 in Ixelles, Brussels, Belgium, where she lived until she was 13 years old. In the family, she is known since childhood as Röschen, a diminutive of Rose.

In 1971, she relocated to Lehrte in the Hanover region after her father had become CEO of the food company Bahlsen.
