Sergey Brin: Early Life and Education

Sergey Brin was born on August 21, 1973 in Moscow to Jewish parents, Michael and Eugenia. Both his parents had graduated from Moscow State University. They shared a three-room apartment in central Moscow with Sergey's grandmother.

Anti-Semitic discrimination was a regular feature of life in the Soviet Union. And it soon became clear to Sergey’s father that the career he desired would always be closed to him because he was Jewish. The Communist Party at the time frequently denied Jews admission to state-run universities. During the Cold War, when physics departments enjoyed particular power and cachet because of the ever-growing importance of nuclear weapons, Michael found that Jews were particularly excluded. I suspect you got your response from the site “Biography”, but Sergey Brin’s family were “Refusniks”. That is, they were Jews who lived in the former Soviet Union who were discriminated against and persecuted by the Soviets because they were Jews, not by other Jews. During that period, Jewish communities in the U.S. actively worked to bring Jews out of the USSR because persecution was so terrible. There were beatings, people lost their jobs and homes, even their lives. Jews were petitioning to leave that land and come to the US or Israel but had to wait years for exit visas if they ever got them. The Communist government was using them as pawns (remember, this was during the Cold War), and it affected events in Europe and the Middle East.

Company filings show that Trump-affiliated data-mining firm Cambridge Analytica has a link to a Chinese security and logistics company run by Erik Prince, the former mercenary who founded private military company Blackwater.

British corporate records show that Alexander Nix, the suspended chief executive of Cambridge Analytica, is also director of a company called Emerdata Ltd. that was incorporated in August 2017.

Other Emerdata directors include people associated with Cambridge Analytica, along with Johnson Ko Chun Shun, who was appointed in January.

Ko is also deputy chairman of Hong Kong-based Frontier Services Group, whose chairman is Prince.

FSG has attracted attention because of concerns Prince plans to provide special forces veterans to assist Chinese companies investing in risky locations overseas.

China's biggest state-owned company, Citic, is a major FSG shareholder.
