As the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to spread in China, Apple is moving the manufacture of some of its top devices to Taiwan.

Apple has begun to move the production of a number of its top gadgets set to launch in the first half of 2020, according to a report by am730, which cited DigiTimes. The products listed in the report to be shifted to Taiwan include AirPods Pro Lite, iPads, and Apple Watches.

Apple is trying to diversify its supply chain geographically due to the spread of the virus, which has seriously affected the production of Apple products in the communist country. Apple intends to gradually increase the proportion of production in Taiwan while still trying to maintain its cooperation with suppliers on the other side of the strait.

It is estimated that at least one-third of China's production lines will lay idle in the first quarter of this year, and it would be almost impossible to return to the normal level of production before the end of February. It is also doubtful whether normal production could be resumed within the first ten days of March.

ccording to the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), the website Taiwantrade.com has been inundated with quotation requests from overseas companies since the Wuhan virus (COVID-19) surfaced. It is an indication that international buyers are seeking new suppliers to make up for the expected plunge of production capacity in China.

Taiwantrade is the country’s largest business-to-business platform operated by TAITRA. The government-sponsored agency has launched a “digital phoenix program” as well as provided networking opportunities for Taiwanese firms, wrote CNA.

Its efforts involve ramped up promotion of Taiwanese brands overseas, virtual reality-based showcases of products and factories at times of reduced trade expos, shipment fee subsidies for cross-border sales, and collaborations with e-commerce giants including Amazon, eBay, and Rakuten.

Over 10,000 companies are expected to benefit from the scheme, according to TAITRA. Other measures to help drive digital transformation for local firms include one-on-one consultation and comprehensive examinations of their global marketing strategies.

Commenting on the role of external players, such as Russia and Turkey, in bringing to an end the protracted Libyan civil war, minister Abdul Hadi Al-Hweij was particularly candid.

“When we talk about peace, we don’t have [Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip] Erdogan in mind,” Al-Hweij said. “Among all the involved political figures, he’s the farthest from a peaceful settlement.”

Al-Hweij was speaking at the Valdai Discussion Club’s Middle East Conference, which he is attending in Moscow.

Libya’s GNA and Turkey signed a security cooperation agreement in November, but that pact has been controversially used by Ankara to deploy its troops to the country. Turkey said at the time this was to help Tripoli in its fight against the rival Libyan National Army (LNA) of Khalifa Haftar. Al-Hweij apparently views such help as unwelcome.

"This is obviously not a Turkish interference, but an aggression. It’s a new attempt by Turks to conquer Libya."
