Nigeria Under Sway Of ISIS. Terrorist Threat Growing In Africa

The ISIS branch in Africa remains an important threat for the regional countries, especially Niger, Nigeria and Chad. Furthermore, over the past months, the terrorist group has increased its military activity in the region and delivered several painful blows to local forces combating the terrorist threat.

In January, the media wing of the ISIS branch in Africa published a video release showing ISIS’ activity and operations in the Lake Chad area, on the border of Nigeria, Niger and Chad. The released footage revealed a low combat training level of ISIS members as well as their dauntless courage during clashes. At the same time, it demonstrated a lack of motivation, dismorale and inability to fight of government forces that have been supposedly trained to stop the terrorist group.

In Feburary, the terrorist group released another video from Africa. It shows the terrorists’ recent operations in the areas of Karito, Ghajram town and Marti in Borno State, northeastern Nigeria. The video shows that demoralized forces of the Nigerian government have significant difficulties in countering attacks of mobile groups (on vehicles and motorcycles) of ISIS terrorists. At the same time, the brainwashed ISIS members continue demonstrating a low training level, but a high courage.

Turkish Forces Fleeing From ‘Observation Posts’ In Government-Controlled Part Of Idlib Under Russian Protection

The Russian Military Police is escorting units of the mighty Turkish Army that flee their ‘observation posts’ located in the area recently liberated by the Syrian Army. The video was filmed on the M5 highway.

Over the past months, the Turkish side has repeatedly claimed that it will keep its ‘observation posts’ in the part of Greater Idlib recently cleared of militants by Syrian troops. Nonethelees, it seems that the Erdogan government opted to slowly decrease the military presence there. In the event of an open conflict between Syria and Turkey, Turkish servicemen deployed at these posts will be captured immediately.

211.6 Million Gallons of Sewage Spilled Into Florida Town’s Waterways

According to officials, around 212 million gallons of sewage has spilled into Fort Lauderdale’s waterways over the last few months. That’s enough sewage to fill a shocking 320 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

During December 2019, the south Florida city’s sewer pipes broke six times resulting in the spilling of 126.9 million gallons of sewage. It was one of south Florida’s biggest spills to date. In the end, the Tarpon River, the Himmarshee Canal, and the streets in three different neighborhoods were affected: Rio Vista, Victoria Park, and Coral Ridge.

And then from January 30 until February 8, 79.3 million gallons of additional sewage spilled into George English Lake while 5.4 million gallons flooded city streets.

City officials reportedly stopped the leak three days after it was discovered by installing a bypass line, but later that same day another leak was found.

Fisherman Jeff Maggio hasn’t been to George English since the sewage began spewing from a pipe underwater in late January. He told the Sun Sentinel:

All the fish are dead there. Everything’s just gone. Crabs, oysters, barnacles and plankton. Crews have been out there picking up hundreds of fish out of the water so it doesn’t look like holy hell. Manatees are swimming in that poison.

Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis plans to seek help from both federal and state agencies. He said:

Considering the extent of this pollution, we should be more than eligible for state and federal assistance. We cannot suffer this burden alone.

Many residents are urging the city to test the water daily and make the results public, but so far officials have yet to agree.

Thanks to a 2017 agreement with the state, the city of Fort Lauderdale may be fined up to $10,000 a day for leaks that spill more than 100,000 gallons of sewage. However, state officials have thus far neglected to fine the city for these recent leaks.

Commissioner Heather Moraitis said:

We’ve had seven sewer breaks so far. We have not received the new price tag yet. That is coming.

It’s been 17 days and we’re still failing [water quality tests] at George English It took half the time to get passing tests down in Rio Vista. We’re not seeing the results we had hoped to see.

City officials plan to meet this week to discuss the lake following the lifting of the last boil order ban thanks to a string of water main breaks happening at the same time as these sewage leaks.

Massachusetts Rep. Arrested On Charges Of Using Campaign Funds To Fuel Alleged Gambling At Area Casinos

BOSTON – Massachusetts State Representative David M. Nangle (D) was arrested today and charged in federal court in Boston with illegally using campaign funds to pay for his personal expenses, defrauding a bank to secure loans to repay debts, and collecting income that he failed to report to the IRS.

Nangle, 59, of Lowell, was indicted on 10 counts of wire fraud, four counts of bank fraud, nine counts of making false statements to a bank and five counts of filing false tax returns. Nangle was arrested this morning and will appear in federal court in Boston this afternoon.

Nangle has been the elected member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives for the 17th Middlesex District since 1999. It is alleged that Nangle, a former House Ethics Committee Chairman, used his campaign committee’s debit card to make personal purchases, including thousands of dollars in gift cards for his personal use, among other things.

It is further alleged that Nangle, who was heavily in debt, gambled extensively at area casinos and online, and then used thousands of dollars in campaign funds to pay for various personal expenses such as dues at a local golf club, rental cars to travel to casinos, flowers for his girlfriend, gas, hotels, and restaurants. According to court documents, Nangle knew that using campaign funds for personal use was prohibited and subject to oversight by an independent state agency, and concealed his theft by filing false reports that disguised the personal nature of the spending.

From at least 2014, Nangle devised a scheme to obtain loans from a bank in order to fund his gambling activities and to repay his personal debts. Nangle allegedly did so by making false statements on loan applications, misstating his income and understating his debt.

According to the indictment, Nangle filed false tax returns for tax years 2014 to 2018 by reporting fictitious business deductions for purported “consulting” work that he did for a Billerica company. Nangle allegedly double dipped on deductible expenses arising from his work as a state legislator, fraudulently claiming thousands of dollars in false deductions for alleged charitable donations, and misleading his tax preparer.

Nangle also allegedly concealed the income he received through goods and services from business owners and other sources. This included $7,000 in kitchen and bathroom work done in Nangle’s home and $7,000 in check payments from a contractor; gambling income from a Connecticut casino; and thousands of dollars that he stole from his campaign account.

The charge of wire fraud provides for a sentence of up to 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of $250,000. The charges of bank fraud and making false statements to a bank each provide for a sentence of up to 30 years in prison, five years of supervised release and a fine of $1 million. The charge of filing false tax returns provides for a sentence of up to three years in prison, one year of supervised release and a fine of $100,000.
