Not much being reported via maritime sites re: corona virus. Last one I posted was this afternoon but dated from 2/6 (bread #10468 or just before) but this came in for today (2/18)

Slump in Global Goods Trade to Deepen With Coronavirus, WTO Says

February 18, 2020 by Bloomberg

By Brendan Murray (Bloomberg) — Global trade in goods will likely stay weak in coming months as disruptions from coronavirus in China staunch the movement of international commerce already slowed by tariffs and uncertainty, according to the World Trade Organization.

The Geneva-based body’s latest forward-looking Goods Trade Barometer stood at 95.5, compared with a level of 96.6 in November. Readings of 100 indicate growth over the next quarter in line with medium-term trends, while those higher or lower than 100 point to growth above or below the recent trend.

“The slow start could be be dampened further by global health threats and other recent developments in the first few months of the year, which are not yet accounted for in the barometer’s best-available historical data,” the WTO said in the report.

The volume of world merchandise trade was down 0.2% in the third quarter last year compared with a year earlier, according to the organization.

“The latest barometer reading provides no indication of a sustained recovery,” it said. “Indeed, year-on-year trade growth may fall again in the first quarter of 2020, though official statistics to confirm this will only become available in June.”

The drop in recent months was tied to declines in container shipping, agricultural commodities and a leveling out of the automotive products index, the WTO said. Readings of export orders, air freight and electronic components, while below the baseline, “appear to have stabilized and would normally be expected to rise in the coming months.”

“However, every component of the Goods Trade Barometer will be influenced by the economic impact of COVID-19 and the effectiveness of efforts to treat and contain the disease,” the organization said.

The U.S. and China signed a deal last month that forestalled any escalation in the trade war between the world’s two largest economies but kept intact tariffs on each other’s goods. The U.K. and European Union, meanwhile, are trying to hammer out an agreement on cross-border commerce this year after Britain officially left the bloc on Jan. 31 after almost half a century of membership.

Keep in mind this goes on with the IMO (International Maritime Organisation, a UN group) mandate of merchant ships to use low-sulphur fuels or install scrubber systems on their exhausts. The scrubber fittings are also behind due to shipyards in China downtime. Mandate took effect 1/1/2020.

International cargo tends to go by ship, those container vessels can carry quite a few. Standard size is roughly 8'X20" (7'7" wide to fit on trailers to allow for 8' limit on US roadways) and when a screenshot for a boatfag report includes a vessel's rated TEU, that is what that means, capacity in standard 20' container.

Not at present but I do keep a weather eye out for anything from Hanseatic Unity Chartering. Can't prove it yet, but bad juju with those. Had a diiger find out they are in the offshore paperes many times and their office in Germany has the image blurred out for Google street view.

Honestly not sure. We chased M/V REVERIE and Alamitos Bay around. Got to watching the traffic for Los Angeles/Long Beach port complex. Tracked many Evergreen Lines ships. I still scan the place often, mostly now to update the list of arrivals form China.

If nothing else, that drop got boatfagging started

Still possible but consider the range of small pleasure craft. Could more easily stick a group in the laundry room of a container ship in Nicaragua, get a few more in Guatemala, put 'em in a container before hitting LAX and no smell worries and for a few bucks dock worker looks the other way right?
