"Harm everyone in the room" sounds like Rad/bio/chem. Biological or chemical weapons would be detected. But a radiation emitter that could be turned on an off (ie: x-ray or gamma source) remotely would fit. Such things compact and efficient enough don't publicly exist yet. But we're close enough that something like this as an offshoot of directed-energy weapon research feels plausible.
