Yes, they take biopsies of the endometriosis masses and send those several samples to the pathology lab for testing to see if it's Endometriosis or not. There is no other way to diagnose Endometriosis. No other way to know for sure if there is Endometriosis present except to go in and take samples. The biopsies are analyzed for the typical glands and stroma of Endometriosis masses.
Other methods are only guessing. ie - put patient on Lupron and see if there is a reaction. This is only guess work and not an actual diagnosis. The only way Endometriosis can actually be diagnosed is via biopsies taken in laparoscopic or laparotomy procedures.
