The real question, knowing what we know now, is, was Nixon in the club or not? What were they REALLY looking for?
If Nixon wasn't in the gang, he would've been looking for something else in the DNC HQ that would've buried them all, back then. Then there was the sloppy cover-up. Then, Nixon resigned. In this theory, Nixon swatted the hornet's nest, and wasn't ready; didn't have a full plan.
If Nixon was in the club, then he was looking to get the dirt they had on him and destroy it. Got caught, and the rest is history.
Nixon had ties to Cohn. If they were close, Cohn might've explained to Nixon how the DS works to entrap/control politicians, and Nixon may have just been trying to squash it. I would think he'd have figured that out by then, though.
