Husband of Katie Hill campaign worker busted by feds for cyberattack on her opponent
The husband of a woman who worked on the campaign of former Congresswoman Katie Hill was arrested by the FBI for allegedly hacking one of her 2018 primary challengers, a report said.
Arthur Jan Dam is accused of launching cyberattacks that paralyzed the website of the political opponent, who wasn’t named in the criminal complaint, but identified himself to Politico as Bryan Caforio.
Caforio, who said he’s been cooperating with federal authorities, said his campaign spent tens of thousands of dollars to repair the site that was hacked just before a debate.
There is no evidence that Hill or Jan Dam’s wife — a former campaign staffer for the congresswoman — were involved in the scheme, prosecutors said.
The ex-California lawmaker told Politico in a statement that she was “surprised and disturbed to see the news of this criminal complaint.”
Hill said she had “no information or knowledge about any of the conduct alleged.”
Caforio lost in the 2018 primary by roughly 1,500 votes to Hill, who went on to unseat former Rep. Steve Knight, a Republican.
Hill resigned from Congress last year after a series of lewd photos of her were leaked to the media, exposing a “throuple” she had with a former female campaign staffer and her estranged husband.
The freshman lawmaker was also the target of a House Ethics Committee probe over allegations she was romantically involved with her old legislative director, which she’s repeatedly denied.

The verdict could lead to a lengthy prison term for Blagojevich, normally a hard-to-silence talking machine who defied legal convention after his arrest and kept a high media profile. But Monday, as he left court with his wife, Patti, Blagojevich was nearly tongue-tied.
"I, frankly, am stunned," said Blagojevich, who was barred after the verdict from traveling outside northern Illinois without court permission. "There's not much left to say other than we want to get home to our little girls and talk to them and explain things to them and try to sort things out."

WASHINGTON — For years they have operated as news organizations in the United States, deploying scores of journalists to cover the major events of the day and to report back to their readers and viewers at home, even if the most important of those was the leadership of the Communist Party of China.
Now, the Trump administration has declared them not practitioners of journalism, but rather operatives of the Chinese state.
The State Department told China on Tuesday that its five foremost news agencies — Xinhua, CGTN, China Radio, China Daily and The People’s Daily — will officially be treated as foreign government functionaries, subject to similar rules as diplomats stationed in the United States. The new action was described on Tuesday afternoon by two senior State Department officials.
The decision — debated in Washington for years but never carried out, in part because of concerns over restricting the freedom of the press — comes at a time when the administration has moved aggressively on multiple fronts to fight what officials describe as extensive Chinese influence and intelligence operations in the United States.
