Some of this has been noted here, and some has not. An albatross can signify either good luck or bad luck. The movie ship would not have been named The Albatross unless a good meaning was intended. The killing of the dolphin in the movie stands in for the killing of the albatross in Rime of the Ancient Mariner–bringing bad luck.
Therefore, the ship Albatross, its fate and that of its crew, signify the relationship of humanity, on the planetary ship, to both itself & the malign forces that have metaphorically (and also in actual fact) commandeered the ship, through generational piracy. In our case, the ship & its command structure in its present form must be destroyed to bring about the world we now fight to create. Note that there are heartbreaking losses among the crew (how intimately we understand this, how deeply), and that the movie ends in a climactic trial, which is what our present military campaign will lead to. My friends, our own ship is not lost. Damaged, & with bloody decks, but we have not yet begun to fight. Don't give up the ship.
