A french researcher found that around 200,000 people died in the forced labor camps of the 3rd Reich due to incompetence of the management at maintaining cleanliness, giving the workers proper food, and controlling disease. All the photos of corpses and emaciated people were the result of epidemics of dysentery. In other places were the inmates were not overcrowded, like Schindler's factories, there was no disease problem.
The camps were to force people to pay back the money they stole through scams and loansharking. Or to encourage them to leave the country. Schindler's tactics worked rather better than the heavy handed tactics of Auschwitz and a few other camps.
And yes, in a couple of camps the guards went overboard and ended up killing many inmates.
It was a dumb idea in the first place to throw so many con artists together in one place. They hatched the story of death camps, and after the war became witnesses because they all told the same story. Although after a while some people embellished things far too much which is what led researchers to dig deeper.

DATELINE Canada — According to this CTV News article, survivors and families of an MK Ultra brainwashing program run by Dr. Ewen Cameron at McGill University in Montreal in the 1950s and 1960s have banded together to bring the horrors of this program more fully into the public eye.
They are planning a class action lawsuit against the provincial and federal government, an initiative which lawyer Alan Stein feels optimistic about:
