US becomes India’s top trading partner, surpassing China despite tariff row

Bilateral trade between the US and India reached some $87.95 billion in 2018-19, making Washington New Delhi’s new top economic partner, despite President Trump’s increased pressure to negotiate a better deal for his country.

The US has surpassed China in terms of bilateral trade with India last year, according to the commerce ministry data, and the trend only increased in April-December 2019 despite the trade disagreements between New Delhi and Washington.

India had a trade surplus of $16.85 billion with the US in 2018-19 financial year (with total trade standing at $87.95bn, compared to $87.07bn with China) – which ironically is one of the top complaints of President Donald Trump who is aggressively seeking ways to reduce America’s trade deficit.

Trump Trolls Mueller Amid Reports Kremlin is Helping Bernie Sanders’ Campaign, ‘Bob Will Get to the Bottom of it!’

President Trump trolled Mueller on Sunday amid reports the Kremlin is helping Bernie Sanders’ campaign.

U.S. officials informed Democratic socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders that Russia is trying to aid his presidential campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination.

When asked by reporters about it, Bernie said he was briefed on the news ‘about a month ago.’

“President Trump and lawmakers on Capitol Hill have also been informed about the Russian assistance to the Vermont senator, according to people familiar with the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive intelligence,” the Washington Post said.

Trump trolled Mueller and the 13 angry Democrats who investigated ‘Russian collusion’ for two years.

Portugal lawmakers vote to allow euthanasia for terminally ill

Hundreds protest outside parliament as bill passes.

LISBON — Portugal’s parliament voted in favor of allowing euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide for terminally ill people Thursday.

The landmark vote mean it the country poised to become one of the few countries in the world permitting the procedures. However, Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa could still attempt to block it.

The Republican Assembly, Portugal's parliament, approved five right-to-die bills, each by a comfortable margin. Left-of-center parties introduced the bills, which had no substantial differences.

Before lawmakers voted, hundreds of people outside parliament building protested the measures. One banner said: “Euthanasia doesn't end suffering, it ends life.”

Some protesters held up crucifixes and religious effigies.

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa could veto the new law, but parliament can override his veto by voting a second time for approval. The Portuguese president doesn't have executive powers.

Podcast: Bank of Finland’s Aleksi Grym on a 1990s’ digital currency

Avant was launched to establish a new payments network but failed due to competition from ATMs

Discussions around whether central banks should issue a digital asset of their own have become more urgent following Facebook’s Libra announcement

Speaking in Central Banking’s latest TechTalk episode, Alexi Grym – digitalisation adviser to the Bank of Finland – reveals central bank digital currencies are not a new phenomenon. In fact, they have been around since the 1990s; they were just not talked about.

In 1993, the Bank of Finland launched its Avant project, which in some ways preceded the attempts to create current central bank-issued digital currencies. “The thing with Finland is we are very good at technology but very bad at marketing,” he says.

Avant was essentially a digital version of a prepaid top-up card, with a chip that effectively stored ‘digital money’. At the time, Avant accounts could be refilled with up to 2000 markka (equivalent to €436 euro today). But it cost 2 marrka (then €0.34) to load or unload the digital “card”.

Avant was run by Toimiraha, a company owned by the Bank of Finland, which was later sold to a group of commercial banks. The idea behind the card, Gym explains, was to establish a single national electronic payment system. The commercial banks would bring their customer bases and their ATM networks.

SIPA Police arrested Two Bosnians suspected of Involvement in smuggling more than a Tonne of Cocaine

The State Investigation and Protection Agency (SIPA) has arrested two people on suspicion of involvement in smuggling more than a tonne of cocaine worth about 50 million euros, which was supposed to end up on Bosnian market!

According to Avaz news portal, cocaine was discovered and seized in several containers in one port in Italy and was hidden in banana boxes. Investigators returned the containers to their final destination, and most of them ended up in Bosnia-Herzegovina and a smaller one in Northern Macedonia.

In addition to two BiH citizens, the action involved several persons from Italy, Montenegro and Northern Macedonia, where four people were arrested. A source close to the investigation says the action was launched after Italian police obtained information on smuggling of narcotics, which were heading to the Balkans, and organized secret surveillance of suspects and drugs. “In one port, Italians seized drugs that were addressed to the port of Bar in Montenegro. Investigators discovered multiple containers of cocaine, concealed with bananas. They found and seized 970 packets of 1,128 kilograms of cocaine”, a source close to the investigation says.

Wells Fargo Agrees to Pay $3 Billion to Resolve Criminal and Civil Investigations into Sales Practices Involving the Opening of Millions of Accounts without Customer Authorization

$3 Billion Payment Result of Deferred Prosecution Agreement in Criminal Matter, Settlement of Civil Claims under FIRREA and Resolution of SEC Proceedings

Wells Fargo & Company and its subsidiary, Wells Fargo Bank, N.A., have agreed to pay $3 billion to resolve their potential criminal and civil liability stemming from a practice between 2002 and 2016 of pressuring employees to meet unrealistic sales goals that led thousands of employees to provide millions of accounts or products to customers under false pretenses or without consent, often by creating false records or misusing customers’ identities, the Department of Justice announced today.

As part of the agreements with the United States Attorney’s Offices for the Central District of California and the Western District of North Carolina, the Commercial Litigation Branch of the Civil Division, and the Securities and Exchange Commission, Wells Fargo admitted that it collected millions of dollars in fees and interest to which the Company was not entitled, harmed the credit ratings of certain customers, and unlawfully misused customers’ sensitive personal information, including customers’ means of identification.

“When companies cheat to compete, they harm customers and other competitors,” said Deputy Assistant Attorney General Michael D. Granston of the Department of Justice’s Civil Division. “This settlement holds Wells Fargo accountable for tolerating fraudulent conduct that is remarkable both for its duration and scope, and for its blatant disregard of customer’s private information. The Civil Division will continue to use all available tools to protect the American public from fraud and abuse, including misconduct by or against their financial institutions.”

Federal Judge in Kansas Resigns After Sexual Harassment Reprimand

A federal judge in Kansas who struck down a law that prevents people from “encouraging” or “inducing” illegal immigration has resigned after being reprimanded for sexual harassment.

The jurist is Judge Carlos Murguia of the U.S. District Court of Kansas, who was appointed to the bench by former President Bill Clinton in 1999. Oral arguments will take place at the Supreme Court on Feb. 25 in an appeals court ruling now under appeal that was a factor in the judge’s controversial ruling.

As The Epoch Times reported last year, Murguia previously worked for El Centro Inc., a left-wing nonprofit based in Kansas City, Kansas, that is an affiliate of UnidosUS. UnidosUS is the new name for the National Council of La Raza (“La Raza” is Spanish for “the race”), a large open-borders group headed by the judge’s sister, Janet Murguia.

Another sister, Mary Murguia, is a judge in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, who, at one time, recused herself from a trial involving then-Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, Arizona, who was strongly pro-enforcement, because her sister was president of La Raza.
