Here Are The 425 Billion Reasons Why WHO Refuses To Call The Covid-19 Outbreak A "Pandemic"

The World Bank launched a $425 million 2017 catastrophe bond issue supporting its Pandemic Emergency Financing Facility (PEF). There are two tranches of PEF bonds outstanding, expected to mature in July, and this means investors of the bonds will collect massive profits if the bonds aren't triggered or will lose everything if the Covid-19 outbreak continues to escalate.

It's becoming increasingly apparent why the World Health Organization (WHO) has had a difficult time calling Covid-19 outbreak a "pandemic," this is because it would cause both bonds to trigger, effectively wiping out bondholders.

The World Bank issued two tranches of PEF bonds worth $425 million in 2017. Bondholders have seen two years of above-average returns with no concern of virus outbreaks around the world that would trigger even the slightest hint both bonds would go into default, until now.

The Covid-19 outbreak in China, spreading across 38 countries and infecting more than 80,000 people, resulting in 2,700 deaths, could leave investors of the bonds with absolutely nothing.

Class A bonds were issued in the amount of $225 million, with a payout of 6.9% annually. The bonds default if a pandemic is identified, and deaths reach over 2,500 in one particular country with an additional 20 deaths in another, the prospectus states.

Class B bonds were issued in the amount of $95 million, with a payout of 11.5% annually but had a much lower trigger level of deaths, versus Class A, hence the high yield.

Bloomberg spoke with several investors who own the bonds. The unidentified people said the bonds aren't quoted on public exchanges.

If the bonds are triggered, it would be determined by Boston-based private company AIR Worldwide Corporation.

The investors said Class B bonds are trading at 60 cents and 70 cents on the dollar, mostly because of the Covid-19 outbreak.

The investor stressed the quoting of the bond isn't public information and wanted to remain anonymous, adding that the large tranche, Class A is trading a little under face value.

The bonds were issued to support the World Bank's PEF, and would only be triggered if certain criteria of a pandemic were met. If triggered, the bondholders would lose their money, the funds would be transferred to developing countries to fight the virus. To date, the bonds have yet to be triggered, as it's increasingly becoming obvious that the WHO may stall calling Covid-19 outbreak a "pandemic" until after the bonds mature in July.

Washington Post Columnist Demands Journalists Abandon Neutrality In Trump Coverage

As if The Washington Post is neutral.

Margaret Sullivan, a Post columnist, is demanding that journalists abandon their supposed objectivity as they cover the presidency of Donald Trump, saying they should just label “a lie a lie.”

“Call it Trump Unbound. In this new era, Trump has declared himself the nation’s chief law enforcement official. He has pardoned a raft of corrupt officials. He has exacted revenge on those he sees as his impeachment enemies,” Sullivan wrote. “In other words, we are in entirely new territory now. Should the news media continue as usual? Should it retain its own traditions as the nation slides toward autocracy? Should it treat the Trump presidency as pretty much the usual thing, with a few more fact-checks and the occasional use of a word like ‘lie?’ No. We need a new and better approach if we’re going to do our jobs adequately.”

Sullivan added that the media should not provide “the phony kind of fairness that tries to duck out of difficult decisions by giving ‘both sides’ of an argument equal time,” and that “in this new era, my prescription is less false-equivalence, more high-impact language, and more willingness to take a stand for democracy.”

Sullivan, who was previously the public editor at The New York Times, said journalists should “abandon neutrality-at-all-costs journalism” and replace it with something she called “Fairness First.”

“I’m talking about the kind of fairness that serves the public by describing the world we report on in honest and direct terms — not the phony kind of fairness that tries to duck out of difficult decisions by giving ‘both sides’ of an argument equal time, regardless of their truth or merit,” Sullivan said.

Sullivan ended her piece by saying “with Trump unbound, the news media need to change. Yes, radically. The stakes are too high not to.”

Conservative NewsBusters contributing writer PJ Gladnick slammed her “rant,” declaring the country has “entered a Media Unhinged era,” Fox News reported.

“Obviously, our media do not fear being charged with bias. They overflow with bias. Sullivan’s just unhappy that it’s just not working. Trump is rising in the polls, even as the press doubles down on the negativity. They’ve yelled themselves hoarse, and now they’re staring at the growing prospect of Four More Years,” Gladnick wrote.

Facebook Investigates 'Suspicious Pro-Sanders Content'

In recent weeks, Facebook has investigated 'suspicious content supporting Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders's presidential campaign,' according to the Wall Street Journal, which notes that the company was unable to substantiate claims that 'Trump supporters or Russian actors were involved in any inauthentic activity' (Why they think Trump supporters would be supporting the Democratic candidate with the best chance of toppling the president is anyone's guess).

Facebook spokesman Andy Stone said the company investigated a claim by an outside researcher over suspicious pro-Sanders content, among regular reports it generally receives from the research community. While Facebook actively monitors its platform for political disinformation, not all internal inquiries are escalated to senior officials, as this one was, people familiar with the matter said.

“We investigate each credible claim we receive, just as we did in this instance when an outside researcher contacted us,” Mr. Stone said. “To date, we have not been able to substantiate the researcher’s claims and we have not been notified by the intelligence community.” -WSJ

Twitter, meanwhile, removed 70 pro-Bloomberg accounts for violating their "platform manipulation" policy.

It is unknown if the investigation into the alleged pro-Sanders activity is ongoing, or if Facebook had contacted Sanders campaign officials about the probe. The WSJ also notes that Sanders was briefed by US officials who told him that Russia is trying to support his campaign for the Democratic nomination, in news that echoes former FBI Director James Comey's 'Steele Dossier' briefing to President Trump - which gave CNN and other outlets license to report wholesale lies that ended in a failed 'witch hunt.'

At least two separate, independent online disinformation researchers have found within the last several months what they believe to be evidence of inauthentic pro-Sanders activity on Facebook that may have links to Russian operatives or Trump supporters, according to one of the people familiar with the matter. At least one of those data sets has been presented to Facebook, which reviewed the material, people familiar with the review said.

Mr. Stone added: “Had we found a campaign of coordinated inauthentic behavior, we would’ve removed it and announced it publicly, just as we did more than 50 times last year.” -WSJ

Facebook has come under pressure from the left for failing to detect and remove Russian misinformation during the 2016 US election - though as Facebook exec Rob Goldman said in 2018 (and was immediately forced to issue a Galilean recant), the majority of Russian-linked ad spending happened after the election, and that "swaying the election was NOT the main goal."

In short, this WSJ article - and Bernie's briefing on Russian support, may be nothing more than an attempt to smear the increasingly popular socialist.

CDC Warns of Coronavirus Spread in USA: ‘Disruption to Everyday Life Might Be Severe’

Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, warned that the spread of China’s deadly coronavirus in the United States is all but certain and said Americans’ everyday life could be dramatically affected.

“As more and more countries experience community spread, successful containment at our borders becomes harder and harder,” Messonnier told reporters on Tuesday afternoon.

“It’s not a question of if this will happen but when this will happen and how many people in this country will have severe illnesses,” the top public health official added. “Disruption to everyday life might be severe.”

Messonnier said the continued spread of the virus has led to a shift to a more dire tone.

“The data over the last week and spread in other countries has certainly raised our level of concern, and raised our level of expectation that we are going to have community spread here, so that has changed our tone,” she said.

The illness that originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan has now infected more than 80,000 people globally. 77,000 cases have been confirmed in China with others in parts of Europe and the Middle East.

To date, 57 cases have been confirmed in the U.S., including 40 cases of people who the government transported from the Diamond Princess cruise ship from Japan.

The virus’ spread caused the U.S. stock market to plunge.

An expected rebound after Monday’s 1,000-point nosedive on Wall Street had yet to materialize by midday Tuesday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down nearly 500 points by 1 p.m. EST. The S&P 500 was down about 50 points and the Nasdaq 122 points.

The 10-year Treasury yield hit a record low of 1.32 percent Tuesday while the 30-year bond also fell.

Some experts anticipated at least somewhat of a rebound Tuesday, which has usually been seen following precipitous drops on a Monday, particularly after futures indicated a boost.

Saudi Court Sentences One Man to Death, Jails Seven Others Accused of Spying for Iran

One man has been sentenced to death and another seven have been jailed by a criminal court in Saudi Arabia on charges of treason and spying for Iran.

Saudi news network Al Arabiya reported Tuesday that the Saudi State Security Court in Riyadh had issued preliminary sentences for a total of eight Saudi nationals.

One of the individuals has been sentenced to death for allegedly “betraying his country and offering intelligence to Iran,” according to the AFP, citing Arabic television news channel Al Ekhbariya. The other seven defendants received a combined jail term of 58 years behind bars for having “associated and cooperated with people working in the embassy of Iran.”

The charges related to the leaking of confidential information pertaining to Saudi national security and intelligence on two foreign embassies in the country. It’s unclear which embassies were at the center of the leaks, but Al Arabiya noted that the details included information such as the offices’ security presences, exits and entrances.

Last week, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Saudi Arabia and met with King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman to discuss Washington’s desire to fight the alleged “ongoing threats posed by the Iranian regime.”

The State Department noted in a news release that Pompeo “assured the Crown Prince that the United States stands with Saudi Arabia in the face of these threats, as reflected in our greater military presence in Saudi Arabia.”

According to the Middle East Monitor, all eight individuals are allowed to appeal their sentences within the 30 days following the official decision.

GE Cut 78,000 Workers In 2019 Amid Stabilization Efforts To Thwart Bankruptcy

While it's too early to write an obituary post for GE, certainly this iconic American company and once darling on Wall Street has stumbled towards the brink of failure.

GE has been a corporate shipwreck for the last decade, where infamous Madoff whistleblower Harry Markopolos warned in late 2019 that the company's 'cash situation' is a lot worse than the company's filings would suggest.

Markopolos said the accounting fraud that GE has conducted would be more significant than Enron and Worldcom combined.

GE's CEO Larry Culp came aboard in 2018 to save the company and sell off business units to raise cash and stabilize cash flows to steer the corporate ship away from bankruptcy threat.

To make "GE Great Again," The Wall Street Journal has learned that 78,000 employees, or about 25% of its workforce, were fired in 2019.

At the end of 4Q19, GE had 205,000 global workers, down from 283,000 over the last year. Its US workforce declined from 97,000 workers in 2018 to 70,000 in 2019, a loss of 17,000.

The Journal notes the number of jobs GE had in 4Q19 is the lowest amount since World War II.

The divestment of GE's oil and gas division and transportation segment accounted for much of the job losses. The oil business had 65,000 employees, while the transportation segment had about 9,000.

It’s Not Natural. Our Kids Are Taught Not To Think

Heather Mac Donald is one of America’s great heroines. For no reason other than love of her country, Western civilization and common sense, she ventures repeatedly into the bizarre and hostile world of America’s colleges and universities. If students listened to her, they would learn a lot. Alas, most of them are not up to that task.

Heather has often been subjected not just to rudeness, but to threats of violence. I can draw on my own experience here. Last year, my youngest daughter invited Heather to give a talk at her college. My wife and I drove Heather down to the college, but before we set out we were told by the school’s administration that we should drive up to the loading dock at the back of the student union, because college authorities didn’t think they could guarantee Heather’s security.

Despite being well past my prime, I was pretty sure that I could guarantee her safety against a group of college leftists–not, in general, a formidable force–but we nevertheless complied with the administration’s request and entered via the loading dock. That night, Heather’s theme was that the full house in the auditorium were among the most privileged people in world history, and their desperation to be oppressed in some fashion was sadly misplaced. By the end of the evening, I think she had won over most of the crowd.

Things didn’t go as well last Thursday at Colgate. Leftists stacked the auditorium, briefed to respond rudely to Heather’s message. It is an article of faith on the Left that college girls are raped at a rate orders of magnitude above the national average. If that were true, not only would law enforcement be devoting much of its resources to the college rape epidemic, but 18 year old girls and their parents would avoid our universities and colleges like the plague. But, of course, that isn’t happening. The whole thing is nonsense. But Heather’s message of sanity was wasted on the Colgate students.

The College Fix has the sad story. This video captures the question and answer session, which is more appalling than you probably can imagine.
