Coronavirus could make the difference as Israelis head back to the polls

As many as 400,000 Israelis may stay away from the polls over coronavirus fears, a poll has found.

With the Likud and Blue and White running neck and neck in the polls, and surveys showing a virtual tie, again, between the Right and Left blocs, all are looking for that one element that might tip the balance, upend the race, and make all the difference – the coronavirus.

A poll commissioned by the Rimon Cohen & Co. consulting firm and carried out by the Midgam polling firm found that 6.5% of 502 respondents said that they were considering not voting in the upcoming elections because of concern about the coronavirus. With 6.4 million Israelis eligible to vote in Monday’s election, this translates into some 400,000 people who – according to the survey – are considering not voting because they don’t want to risk exposure to the virus.

Which does not mean that all or even most of them will not turn out to vote. It does mean, however, that this is an issue on people’s minds, and that if fake news reports emerge on Monday in the social media about someone with the virus having voted at one particular polling station or another, that could conceivably keep people away from those locations.

In other words, the coronavirus and fake news could create a perfect storm keeping people away from the polling booths, something that could skew the election results.

According to Roni Rimon, a partner in the firm that carries his name, the survey indicated that the majority of those who expressed concern about the virus came from voters under the age of 34, with some 15% of those between the ages of 25-34 saying this was a consideration for them, and 13% in the 18-24 age group saying the same thing. Ironically, people in those age groups are the least affected by the virus, which sickens and kills mainly elderly people with compromised immune systems.

Rimon said that concern about contracting the virus by going to the polls might just be an excuse used by younger people to explain to pollsters why they are considering not voting.

In an election where both parties are working hard to ensure that their constituents turn out to vote – with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu crisscrossing the country saying that persuading 300,000 Likud voters who stayed home last time to vote this time will be the difference in this election – voter turnout is essential. Thus, anything that could affect turnout could be a game changer.

Back in November Sam Nunberg was on MSNBC and said that President Trump should pardon Roger Stone after he was convicted in crooked Judge Amy Berman Jackson’s courtroom in front of a biased anti-Trump jury. At the time Sam didn’t think Trump would pardon Stone.

Today Trump’s personal assistant Sam Nunberg posted a request at Newsmax to his former employer and friend: Pardon Roger Stone!

Sam Nunberg told The Gateway Pundit that he is cautiously optimistic on the Roger Stone pardon,

“It remains to be seen. I’m cautiously optimistic but the president will face continued pushback from White House advisers, AG Barr and Republican Senators. The reality is that no one deserves a pardon more than Roger who is facing the prospect of a jail sentence that is longer than first time drug offenders and violent criminals. With the Obama appointed Judge Amy Berman Jackson’s impending ruling against Roger Stone’s motion for a retrial, time is of the essence for President Trump to not commute Mr. Stone’s sentence, but rather, to pardon Mr. Stone.

If President Trump allows Mr. Stone to be jailed, the president will appear at best inept or impotent — and at worse both.

Heading into a re-election where his eventual socialist Democrat opponent will impugn the president as a corrupt demagogue who has bungled legislative bi-partisan opportunities on infrastructure and lowering prescription drug prices, allowing Mr. Stone to be jailed for “covering up” as Judge Jackson described at the Stone sentence, would give further credence to his opponent’s narrative that the president was illegimately elected by ill-gotten gains in 2016.

While the president has both spoken and tweeted about the miscarriage of justice which Mr. Stone has faced by the Mueller Office of U.S. Special Counsel, he is surely facing opposition in both the West Wing and at the Justice Department (DOJ).

His own Attorney General William Barr, who bungled prosecution’s sentencing memo submissions, has taken the insubordinate step of publicly rebuking the president’s comments on the Stone prosecution, calling it a “righteous prosecution,” while also threatening to resign if the president continues to tweet about ongoing investigations and prosecutions — or lack thereof.

And while the attorney general tries to hold the president at bay with the so-called “John Durham Criminal Probe,” nothing in the attorney general’s record up to date, whether it is the lack of indictments on Andy McCabe for lying or James Comey for the mishandling of classified information, should give either the president or his supporters any confidence that Barr will be any different than his predecessors in holding the corrupt Obama election meddlers accountable.

Nancy Pelosi: ‘Too Late’ for Trump Admin to Stem Coronavirus Outbreak

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) on Wednesday accused the Trump administration of responding “too late” to halt the possible spread of China’s deadly coronavirus in the United States.

“This is shameful,” Pelosi told reporters on Capitol Hill when asked about the administration sending a $2.5 billion supplemental budget request to combat the illness. “He puts forth a proposal now that is meager, anemic in terms of addressing this. Ebola, we did $5 billion. And now they’re trying to take the Ebola money and spend it here.”

“What he’s doing is late, too late, anemic,” she added. “Hopefully, we can make up for the loss of time but we have to have professionals in place, resources that are adequate and not use scare tactics about people coming back to our country.”

The administration’s request proposes spending unused funds earmarked to fight Ebola, with officials seeking $1.25 billion in new money for vaccine development and purchasing protective equipment.

Asked for her thoughts on President Donald Trump’s comments about the coronavirus, Pelosi replied tersely: “I don’t think the President knows what he’s talking about. Once again.”

Earlier Wednesday, President Donald Trump announced that he will deliver a press conference on his administration’s response to the virus and took aim at the establishment media for making the illness “look as bad as possible.”

While returning from India on Air Force One on Tuesday, President Trump also criticized Democrat presidential candidates for accusing his administration of mishandling the outbreak.

“CDC and my Administration are doing a GREAT job of handling Coronavirus, including the very early closing of our borders to certain areas of the world. It was opposed by the Dems, “too soon”, but turned out to be the correct decision. No matter how well we do, however, the Democrats talking point is that we are doing badly,” the president wrote. “If the virus disappeared tomorrow, they would say we did a really poor, and even incompetent, job. Not fair, but it is what it is. So far, by the way, we have not had one death. Let’s keep it that way!”

Earlier Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned that Americans could see “significant disruption” if the virus continues to spread in the U.S.

“Ultimately, we expect we will see community spread in this country,” Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, told reporters.

DOJ Creates New Unit to Strip Citizenship from Terrorists, Criminals

The Justice Department on Wednesday announced a new unit to handle the denaturalization of individuals who obtained citizenship illegally and other criminals.

The new section dedicated to “investigating and litigating revocation of naturalization” of individuals who illegally secured naturalization or committed other serious crimes will be under the Civil Division’s Office of Immigration Litigation.

“This move underscores the Department’s commitment to bring justice to terrorists, war criminals, sex offenders, and other fraudsters who illegally obtained naturalization,” DOJ said in a statement announcing the new unit.

“When a terrorist or sex offender becomes a U.S. citizen under false pretenses, it is an affront to our system—and it is especially offensive to those who fall victim to these criminals,” Assistant Attorney General Jody Hunt said.

Riot police on the Greek island of Lesbos today fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of protesters against the creation of a new detention centre for migrants as the latest outburst of unrest entered a second day.

The Athens government infuriated residents of five Aegean islands - all straddling a key route to Europe used by thousands of migrants - by announcing two weeks ago that it would expedite the construction of secured detention centres to replace open-access, severely overcrowded camps.

Locals residents - who are are concerned such an arrangement could become permanent - tried to approach a site earmarked for a new migrant centre and clashed with police on a road winding through a forest.

Protesters launched petrol bombs which burst into flames, threw rocks and kicked back gas canisters as the clash escalated.

'More than 1,000 people protesting at the new facility… threw stones at police, smashing their helmets. Police were forced to use chemicals,' a police spokesman said, using a euphemism for tear gas.

Earlier in the day, hundreds of people gathered in the town of Mytilene on Lesbos as part of a general strike to protest at government plans to create the new closed migrant facility.

On Tuesday, locals used vehicles and rubbish trucks to try to block police reinforcements and heavy machinery in a port.
