Turkish troops shelled by Syrian forces were among militants โ Russian top brass
MOSCOW, February 28. /TASS/. The Turkish military who came under fire from Syrian troops on February 27 were among the advancing militants, the Russian Defense Ministry told reporters.
"Turkish military who were in the terrorist unitsโ battle formations came under Syrian troopsโ fire near the inhabited community of Behun on February 27," the ministry said.
According to the ministry, militants from the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham terror group (one of the names of Jabhat al-Nusra, outlawed in Russia) made an attempt to launch a large-scale offensive in Syriaโs Idlib.
"On February 27, 2020, the units of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham terror group operating in the Idlib de-escalation zone made an attempt to conduct a large-scale offensive operation on the positions of Syrian government troops," the ministry informed.
It stressed that the Russian Reconciliation Center in Syria had requested information on the exact locations of all units of the Turkish armed forces deployed close to the areas of terroristsโ military operations. According to the information provided by Ankara, there were no Turkish troops in the Behun area, the Defense Ministry stressed.
The Russian Reconciliation Center has stayed in touch with Turkeyโs coordination center in Idlib in order to rule out any security threats to Turkish observation posts and units deployed in the Idlib de-escalation zone caused by the Syrian armyโs reprisal fire.
Air strikes by Russia
As for the Russian Aerospace Forces, they did not carry out airstrikes in the area close to Behun where Turkish servicemen had been killed, the Russian top brass stated. "Aircraft of Russiaโs Aerospace Forces were not used near the inhabited community of Behun," the statement reads.
According to the Defense Ministry, "immediately after receiving information about the injured Turkish troops, Russia took comprehensive measures to ensure full cessation of hostilities by Syrian forces." The evacuation of the Turkish servicemen who had been killed or wounded to Turkey was ensured as well.
Governor of Turkeyโs Hatay province bordering Syria Rahmi Dogan earlier reported that Turkish troops had come under fire in Syriaโs idlib Governorate, with at least 33 soldiers killed. According to Omer Celik, spokesman for the Justice and Development Party led by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, after that incident Ankara will view Syrian troops as enemy targets.
The situation in Idlib deteriorated dramatically in early February after the Russian and Turkish taskforces had made another attempt to enforce a ceasefire. Terrorists only intensified their attacks instead. Last week, Erdogan said that Ankara was ready to use all its combat might in case of a military operation in Idlib. He also noted that another military campaign in Idlib was just a matter of time.

Immigrants trusted Maryland to give them licenses. Then ICE betrayed them.
Today in corrosive public policy, Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been running warrantless facial recognition searches of Maryland driver's licenses allegedly as a way to hunt down undocumented immigrants, according to a report from The Washington Post.
Why Maryland? In 2013, the state passed a bill that allowed undocumented immigrants to obtain driver's licenses, a policy intended and proven to increase public safety. The state has issued more than 275,000 of these licenses to date.

Judge in Arkansas tells Hunter Biden to show up next month
Circuit Judge Holly Meyer is ordering Hunter Biden to come to Arkansas next month for a deposition, rejecting claims that he's too busy to make the trip until April.
"He needs to make himself available and unless his hair is on fire, he needs to be in Arkansas and he needs to be in a deposition," she told lawyers in the case during an afternoon telephone conference call.
Biden, the son of former Vice President Joe Biden, is the defendant in a paternity suit filed by Lunden Alexis Roberts of Independence County. The court determined in January that based on a DNA test, Hunter Biden is the father of her toddler, initially referred to in court filings as Baby Doe.
Child support still needs to be set, but Biden has delayed supplying full financial records, court files show.
In a signed Nov. 27 affidavit, Biden swore that he is unemployed and said he hasn't had a monthly income since May.
Roberts' attorney, Clint Lancaster, had tried, without success, to schedule a deposition before a pretrial hearing, which is set for March 13.
After reaching an impasse, he filed a notice of deposition Monday instructing Biden to appear in Little Rock on March 5.
But Biden's attorney, Brent Langdon, said it would be "unduly burdensome and oppressive" for Biden to show up that day. He asked the court to intervene.
Biden "can be available April 1, 2020," Langdon wrote in a "motion to quash" and "motion for protective order" filed Tuesday. "My client cannot be available prior to that date."
During Wednesday's conference call, Meyer pressed Langdon to explain his client's unavailability, noting Biden's purported work status.
"My question to you is, why could your client not be available until after April 1? All the information I have is that he's unemployed," she said.
Langdon did not tell the court what was keeping Biden so busy.
When deposition dates were being considered, "I did not have his calendar per se," Langdon said. "My client stated that he was not going to be available until after April 1."
During the call, Meyer expressed dissatisfaction with the explanations she had been offered thus far.
"It's not good enough for him to just say, 'I'm not available.' That's not good enough. I need to know why he's not available or where he is or what could possibly be more important than what's going on in this case," Meyer said. "And again, the only information I have is that your client's not employed right now, so it's not a work excuse. So what is it?"
Langdon offered no details about his client's whereabouts or activities.
After hearing from both attorneys and asking about their calendars, Meyer rejected the March 5 date Lancaster had originally sought as well as the April 1 date proposed by Langdon.
Instead, Biden will need to show up on either March 11 or March 12 to answer questions, the judge stated.
