Migrants calling for help in water off Del Mar rescued after 'dump and run'

DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) – Authorities rescued several migrants dropped off by a panga boat in the waters off Del Mar Friday morning, but a search continues for at least five people still unaccounted for.
At around 4:30 a.m., multiple agencies including the Border Patrol, San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and San Diego Fire-Rescue Department were summoned to the beach off 11th Street after receiving reports of people in the water calling for help in Spanish.
Rescue crews, including an off-duty lifeguard who happened to be on the beach, went into the water and helped bring 11 migrants to shore. Some of them were wearing life jackets, authorities said
Seven of those people were taken to the hospital to be evaluated, 10News learned.
As of 7 a.m., crews were still searching for five people who were unaccounted for.
An Encinitas Fire Department chief said a panga boat from Mexico dropped the people off about 200 yards off the shore and left the area, in what is known as a "dump and run."
Authorities have not located the panga boat.
A search for the unaccounted people was expected to last several hours and will include a dive team, the fire chief said.

RICHMOND, Va. – An electrified crowd gathered at the Virginia State Capitol Thursday morning in support of legislation that would allow undocumented immigrants to obtain a driver's license.
Positioned in front of the Capitol stairs, hundreds waved signs and flags in the sky chanting, "si se puede," or "yes, we can."
The supporters were urging the General Assembly to pass legislation that would allow undocumented immigrants the right to get a driver's license, regardless of status.
Earlier this month on crossover day, both the House and Senate passed bills supporting the move.
Recently, the Senate passed driver privilege cards ( SB 34 ), which would allow the same privileges as a license or a permit.
Applicants would have to show an individual tax return and show they are not in violation of insurance requirements.
