Turning water into wine can be actual, but it can also be a metaphor (symbol) for imbuing people with spirit that can only come from God. The ancients – and we too – lack language that can accurately describe spiritual things. Words that describe the physical realm have to do double-duty to also refer to the spiritual realm.
