In Germany, after WWII, those expelled from Poland and the Sudetenland were put up in private homes.
If a house had unoccupied rooms, the expellees were put up there. 2 or 3 years for some before they were compensated for what they had lost and had means to get a house of their own.
Bad blood about it, still. There are Germans today who worry about being forced to take in migrants.
