Ty Baker!

Did some quick calculations on how long it might take for the COVID-19 virus to spread across the whole US.

First off, I'm no expert. Secondly, I'm abusing the so-called "R0" rate here–it's supposed to represent the number of people that an infected person will infect over the period that they are contagious, assuming that everyone in a population is susceptible. That last part is huge–in Iran, it's spread like wildfire because they haven't done shit to slow it down; that might be closer to the real R0. In other places it has spread more slowly, because actions have been taken to stop it.

With that having been said, I'm assuming that a person is contagious for two weeks. If that's the case, the lines show how long it would spread if the effective R0 across the US is the number in the legend.

Election is in 35 weeks.

"This is not another 4-year election."

oh–I assumed a starting point of 66 people infected. That's not the official amount–only about 20 are in the continental US. However, given that we don't know where some people got infected, we can assume that it's much higher.

Again, the point is not to cause fear–I have a sneaking suspicion that we're ready for this.
