Question about POTUS tweet from yesterday:

How are we to read the syntax of this line: “ The real politicians ate them up and spit them out!”

Ate and spit are not parallel in tense (eat or spat would do the trick). If the present “spit” were desired, it would be more come to say ate them up and are spitting them out, but I don’t know that it’s currently incorrect. Just peculiar.

As peculiar as eating someone and spitting them out.

Didn’t like the taste, T?

Another construction:

Ordinarily, food is spitted and then ate (eaten).
