Michael Hay, who managed the longest-running law firm in Pyongyang, dies at 58

Lawyer was known for winning disputes in DPRK, despite its opaque legal system

Michael Hay, who founded and managed the longest-running foreign-backed law firm to be based in North Korea, died last Wednesday in South Korea, aged 58.

His death was confirmed by friends and former colleagues to NK News.

Hay – also a friend of this author – was well known among businesses and NGOs as one of the few lawyers to have ever successfully won commercial disputes in North Korea’s opaque legal system.

A dual British-French national and member of the New York bar, he founded Hay, Kalb & Associates in Pyongyang in 2004 after working for over a decade in the South Korean legal system.

His firm operated from the Pyongyang Hotel with a team comprising North Korean partners until 2016, when it suspended service amid growing international sanctions pressure and decreased foreign appetite to explore the DPRK market…..

Running on an anti-corruption ticket the Ordinary People (OLaNO) party won 25 per cent of the vote with over 99 per cent of the votes counted. Smer-SD, the centre-left governing party, saw its share of the vote fall to 18 per cent.

Coronavirus uncertainty rules, but markets functioning OK: BIS

MARC JONES

LONDON

REUTERS

PUBLISHED 54 MINUTES AGO

The Bank for International Settlements said on Sunday that financial markets had functioned resiliently during last week’s coronavirus-sparked sell-off and this was a sign that post-crisis reforms were doing their job.

The BIS, dubbed the central bank to central banks, called the near $6 trillion wipeout in world stocks last week a “rude awakening” for investors, but said there were no signs of it having the potential to turn into a financial crisis.

“For all the turmoil and anxiety, both market functioning and financial intermediation more generally proved resilient,” the head of the BIS’ Monetary and Economic Department, Claudio Borio, said in the umbrella group’s latest quarterly report.

Coronavirus: South Korea sect leader to face homicide probe over deaths

The leader of a religious sect in South Korea could face a homicide investigation over some of the country's coronavirus deaths.

The city government of the capital Seoul has asked prosecutors to charge Lee Man-hee, the founder of the Shincheonji Church, and 11 others.

They are accused of hiding the names of some members as officials tried to track patients before the virus spread.

South Korea is battling the worst coronavirus outbreak outside China.

The country has reported 3,730 cases and 21 deaths so far. More than half of all infections involve members of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, a fringe Christian group.

Authorities say Shincheonji members infected one another in the southern city of Daegu last month, before fanning out around the country.
