Woman pleads guilty to felony assault at last year's 'God, Guns and Liberty' rally

A woman arrested for striking another woman in the face with a metal water bottle at the "Gods, Guns and Liberty" rally in Eugene last year has pleaded guilty to felony assault.

Bethany Lenora Houghton, 28, was sentenced to spend 30 days in the Lane County Jail with credit for time served, despite pleading guilty to a Measure 11 offense, which is supposed to carry a mandatory minimum sentence of five years, 10 months.

However, according to Lane County prosecutor Elle McCall, there's a statute that allows the court to opt a person out of the Measure 11 minimum sentence and give them a lesser sentence. In Houghton's case, McCall said, she also was sentenced to five years of supervised probation, so if she is found to be in violation of her probation and that probation is revoked, she will be facing a prison sentence.

Houghton also pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawful use of a weapon, the weapon being the metal water bottle.

Houghton was one of a few arrests from the conservative rally last August, which drew a crowd of liberal counter-demonstrators outside of the Lane County Courthouse.
