F-104 was a widowmaker (ask the Luftwaffe) and only became popular because of bribes by Lockheed at the time. The Brits had the Saunders-Roe SR177 but the F-104 and bribes killed it off.

Sea Fury, an achingly gorgeous plane.
Mach 1 in vertical flight,. awesome. The only fighter to engage a U2 at the same altitude. They didn't land, they did a controlled crash.
Navy planes with air-cooled radial engines were a lot more reliable and could take a real beating. Radiators were just too much of a liability at sea.
