It's not really that hard to figure out when you know a few things.

People forget that there was no such thing as Judaism until the various teachings from the region were consolidated. There was something of a pantheon prior to that, though it's hard to compare as out understanding of pantheons is distorted. Each tribe came from a god within the pantheon as the ancient beliefs went.
There are some who come from the descended angel, logically. The old mystic beliefs were that a god fragmented upon descent into various reflections and refractions of itself. Therefore the tribes are effectively all of their god, and many of the gods were from a higher order of god, and so on.
Thus the argument of collectivism vs individualism is far more existential than most realize. Some understand a god had very good reason to do what it did. Others like the idea that we are in the way of a superior being's work…. Or at least like making that argument as a means of justifying their behavior to the good who always outnumber the bad.
They need symbolism to appear to be justified. That reliance, however, is a weakness as the meaning of a symbol is logical. It is a statement such as 1=1.
