Even we mortal men have laws against cruel and unusual punishment. Are we to to believe that a loving and merciful God has a lower standard? I think not. Annihilation of the soul is a better fate for the evil ones. And the merciful thing about that is that they'll not realize that they're gone… for eternity. God will simply turn that soul energy into something more pleasing and useful to His creation.
