Rick Doblin started MAPS in Sarasota in the 1980s as an offshoot of undergrad work he did at New College, then continued to build it through his academic career
Originally it focused on MDMA because it was technically legal until the early 80s then when it was fully restricted MAPS was a sort of civil right organization
Later MAPS got into in depth research studies on psychedelics in general
So apart from the fact it blossomed under a houseful of hippies in Florida in the 1980s with full transparency to the college community, and was as far from the three-letter agencies as could be imagined, the timeline is way, way the fuck off from anything related to MK Ultra, Leary, etc
MAPS became a legitimate player in psychological health and experimentation in the mid 1990s
