UK airline Flybe collapses as virus hits weakened company
Flybe’s fall highlights the damage that the virus outbreak has had on the airline industry, which has cut back on flights around the world as people avoid flying out of precaution.
The British regional airline narrowly avoided bankruptcy in January but had continued to lose money. Unions and opposition politicians attacked both the airline’s owners and Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s government for failing to act to save it.
“We’re all a bit gutted – Flybe is a household name, we’ve been flying with them for 40 years and we really tried to do everything we could back at the turn of the year,’’ Transport Secretary Grant Shapps told Sky News.
Shapps said that for “an already weak company,” the virus made survival impossible.
The U.K. Civil Aviation Authority urged customers to make “their own alternative travel arrangements.
Flybe’s network included more than half of British domestic flights outside of London. Europe’s largest regional carrier, Flybe had a major presence at airports such as Aberdeen, Belfast City, Manchester and Southampton, and flew some 9 million passengers a year.
Its links to some difficult-to-reach spots in the U.K. were a strong selling point for the government. But the government’s efforts were dogged by allegations from competitors that it had provided state aid to Flybe.

OPEC agrees biggest oil production cut since 2008 financial crisis, but only if Russia joins
The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), led by Saudi Arabia, has decided to cut production by up to 1.5 million barrels per day. The decision is believed to be conditional on approval from Russia.
The production cut will be OPEC’s deepest cut since the 2008 financial crisis.
OPEC and its allies, including Russia, are also expected to keep existing cuts of 2.1 million bpd, which expire this month, in place until the end of 2020.
"We now convene at a time when the outbreak of Covid-19 has had a pronounced adverse impact on economic and oil demand forecasts in 2020," Algeria's energy minister and current OPEC president Mohamed Arkab told the oil cartel ministers.
"Complex challenges require collegiality and concerted action," he added.
A meeting of both OPEC and non-OPEC members, sometimes referred to as OPEC+, will take place on Friday.
If they agree to remove an extra 1.5 million bpd from the market, it would bring the group's overall output reduction to 3.6 million bpd or about 3.6 percent of global supplies.
After meeting with his Saudi counterpart in Vienna on Wednesday, Russia's energy minister returned to Moscow for consultations but will be back in Vienna on Friday. So far, Moscow has indicated it would back an extension but not a deeper cut.
Goldman Sachs said this week that OPEC will need to agree to curb production by at least one million barrels per day in order to avoid a "sharp" sell-off.
Oil demand has been hit hard by the Covid-19 outbreak, with prices plummeting 20 percent this year. As of Thursday, international benchmark Brent was trading 0.67 percent higher at $51.47. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) stood at $47.15, up around 0.79 percent higher.

Chinese oil demand has dropped by about 3 million barrels a day, or 20% of total consumption, as the coronavirus squeezes the economy, according to people with inside knowledge of the country’s energy industry.
The drop is probably the largest demand shock the oil market has suffered since the global financial crisis of 2008 to 2009, and the most sudden since the Sept. 11 attacks. It could force the hand of OPEC and its allies, which are considering an emergency meeting to cut production and staunch the decline in prices.
“It is truly a black swan event for the oil market,” said John Kilduff, a partner at Again Capital LLC in New York. “There was some hope for the demand outlook this year before the outbreak, but that has been knocked off its block. OPEC+ has to react. If there are no further production cuts, there will only be more price losses.”

‘I don’t want to shame Greta Thunberg, but…’: Activist dubbed ‘anti-Greta’ by media RIPS INTO ‘climate alarmism’
The media have invented the ‘anti-Greta’ label to portray her as an “evil right antichrist,” but it only attracted more people to her ideas, Naomi Seibt, who says the human effect on climate change is vastly exaggerated, told RT.
Seibt calls herself a “climate realist” and bluntly rejects the term “climate change denier,” which is another label used to describe her and her supporters by the opposing side. It implies that “we’re just selfish and ignorant,” but it’s not the case, she pointed out.
“We’re about being scientific skeptics and looking into more sensible ways to improve the environment to be more in line with our values when it comes to interacting with nature,” the 19-year-old said.
It looks a much less radical stance than the one of 17-year-old environmental activist and mainstream media darling Greta Thunberg, who insists that mankind must urgently cut emissions to zero to avoid a catastrophic breakdown of the climate on Earth.
Naomi says she perfectly understands why Thunberg and her are being pitted against each other.
It was the German media that started this ‘anti-Greta’ thing in the first place. It was to portray me as a kind of an evil antichrist on the right.
She was unhappy about this at first, but then decided to “have fun” with the label and even get some advantage out of it. “You come for the anti-Greta, but you stay for Naomi Seibt,” she explained.
“I’m not against Greta… I’m sure she’s a very nice girl…. innocent in all of this,” the teenager clarified. “It’s just that she’s not about the science.”
[Greta] is basically just about spewing panic and telling people to change their lives entirely… It has nothing to do with science and skepticism anymore. And that’s what’s awful about it.
