President Trump Nixes Extending Current FISA Surveillance Law

The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act has been greatly abused in recent years and is full of loopholes that allow bad actors to misuse the system for political purposes, including spying on Americans. The current FISA legislation is due to expire in 2 weeks. ⁃ TN Editor

President Donald Trump told top House and Senate Republicans on Tuesday evening that he would not support a clean extension of federal surveillance powers and called for them to work out a deal with Democrats on how to move forward.

GOP leaders are already talking about a potential 30-day extension of provisions in the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act while they try to hammer out a deal with Democrats.

Trump’s comments in an hour-plus meeting on Tuesday night came despite a push from Attorney General William Barr to modify the law administratively to appease the president, who has railed in the past against the spying law after authorities used it to monitor an associate of his 2016 campaign.

“The president made it exceedingly clear he will not accept a clean re-authorization … without real reform,” Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), told reporters after the meeting. “He was told by the attorney general, we can massage around the edges and we can fix this through regulation, the president didn’t accept that, pushed back very vigorously and said ‘we’re not doing this.'”

Facebook Removes Trump's 'Official 2020 Census' Ads Over Their Allegedly Misleading Nature

The real census in the US is about to start on 12 March, but apparently POTUS' campaign sought to obtain information about potential voters' preferences beforehand.

Facebook decided to take down Trump campaign ads encouraging people to take part in the "Official 2020 Congressional District Census" after they were harshly criticised by some activists as "fake" and "deceptive".

"There are policies in place to prevent confusion around the official US census. This is an example of those being enforced", Facebook explained.

Man Fined $500, Threatened with Jail for Criticizing Traffic Cameras Without a License

Portland, OR – Mats Järlström, an Oregon resident who trained in engineering in Sweden tried to tell officials in Oregon that he developed a safer method for timing traffic lights in 2014. Instead of listening, however, the state engineering board fined him for criticizing them. Seriously. Now, after refusing to back down against these tyrants for years, Järlström has finally been vindicated.

Last week, the official Journal of the Institute of Transportation Engineers said he was right. The ITE sets traffic policy recommendations for the United States — and they said cities should be using his formula, according to KOIN.

“It is a big deal,” Järlström told KOIN 6 News. “It’s the top.”

Järlström says Oregon laws make it illegal for anyone who isn’t a licensed engineer to criticize the state’s methods for timing traffic lights. Järlström calls that an unconstitutional prohibition on free speech. So he sued them.

Former Acting Inspector General for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Indicted on Theft of Government Property and Scheme to Defraud the United States Government

A federal grand jury in the District of Columbia returned a 16-count indictment against a former Acting Inspector General for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and a former subordinate for their alleged theft of proprietary software and confidential databases from the U.S. government as part of a scheme to defraud the U.S. government.

Assistant Attorney General Brian A. Benczkowski of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, U.S. Attorney Timothy J. Shea for the District of Columbia, DHS Inspector General Joseph V. Cuffari and Inspector General Tammy L. Whitcomb for the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) made the announcement.

The indictment charges Charles K. Edwards, 59, of Sandy Spring, Maryland, and Murali Yamazula Venkata, 54, of Aldie, Virginia, with conspiracy to commit theft of government property and to defraud the United States, theft of government property, wire fraud, and aggravated identity theft. The indictment also charges Venkata with destruction of records.

According to the allegations in the indictment, from October 2014 to April 2017, Edwards, Venkata, and others executed a scheme to defraud the U.S. government by stealing confidential and proprietary software from DHS Office of Inspector General (OIG), along with sensitive government databases containing personal identifying information (PII) of DHS and USPS employees, so that Edwards’s company, Delta Business Solutions, could later sell an enhanced version of DHS-OIG’s software to the Office of Inspector General for the U.S. Department of Agriculture at a profit. Although Edwards had left DHS-OIG in December 2013, he continued to leverage his relationship with Venkata and other DHS-OIG employees to steal the software and the sensitive government databases.

Ex-UAW president Gary Jones charged in corruption probe

Federal prosecutors have charged Gary Jones, the former head of the UAW, in the corruption probe.

The charges, which accuse Jones, among other things, of conspiring to embezzle union funds and aiding racketeering activity, were unsealed Thursday. They were filed as an information in U.S. District Court in Detroit, meaning Jones is expected to plead guilty.

Jones resigned in disgrace last year after he was implicated in federal court papers which said he was one of several top union officials who had embezzled more than a million dollars and spent it on meals, cigars and other lavish goodies.

The paperwork charging Jones was actually filed on Feb. 27 but kept under seal. That was just days before Jones' former aide Edward "Nick" Robinson pleaded guilty in the case and agreed to cooperate.

Pro-life views get student group kicked out of memorial for murder victims

‘Not okay’ to join with an ‘anti-feminist/anti-choice organization’

An autism group reversed its decision to allow a campus pro-life group to participate in its event after facing criticism from an autism activist who supports abortion rights.

Wolf Pack for Life at Loyola University New Orleans got the green light from the Autism Self Advocacy Network to host a vigil for the annual Disability Community Day of Mourning, which memorializes “disabled people murdered by their family members or caregivers.”

The network explicitly told the student club that its pro-life stance wasn’t a problem, Wolf Pack for Life leader Sophie Trist wrote in a blog post last month for Rehumanize International, a progressive nonprofit that opposes “all forms of aggressive violence against human beings.”
