Travel to Antarctica has reached fever pitch.

You can go by yacht. You can come and go in a single day. You can even book a fly-around for New Year’s Eve. And now you can stay in a five-star hotel with bespoke furnishings and its own fleet of aircraft.

To be fair, the White Desert camp isn’t exactly new. And it’s no secret spot, either; the guest ledger includes such names as Prince Harry and Bear Grylls. But as a means of celebrating its 10th anniversary, the so-called most remote property in the world has gotten a complete luxury overhaul.

Patriarch Kirill visits Bellingshausen Russian Antarctic Station

On February 17, 2016, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia visited the Bellingshausen Station on Waterloo Island in Antarctica.

The plane carrying the patriarch and his party took off after 7 o’clock in the morning, local time, from Punta Arenas, Chile, where it stopped for service on its way from Paraguay. It is the southernmost city on the South American continent and the departure point for expeditions for Antarctica.

President Obama, accompanied by First Lady Michelle Obama, is in Argentina to meet with newly elected President Mauricio Macri and First Lady Juliana Awada. Together, the leaders explored opportunities to strengthen the relationship between the United States and Argentina and partner to address global challenges, such as climate change, peacekeeping, refugees, and the defense of human rights and democracy. It was the first bilateral visit to Argentina by a U.S. President in almost two decades.

The leaders also discussed President Macri’s economic reform agenda, opportunities for expanding trade and investment, science and technology cooperation, and U.S. support for building Argentina’s capacity to combat organized crime.

MCMURDO STATION, Antarctica — U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry didn’t comment on President-elect Donald Trump’s election victory on Friday while visiting Antarctica, but did say that citizens who care about limiting emissions might have to march in the streets to push for more aggressive action.

Media Release - Governor-General Visits Australian Antarctic Territory

18 November 2016

The Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), and Lady Cosgrove yesterday visited the Australian Antarctic Territory.

Traveling on a scheduled cargo flight to the continent, the Governor-General met scientists and members of the Australian Antarctic Division at Wilkins Aerodrome.

The visit included an overview of an Antarctic Field Camp work, a briefing on aviation and cargo operations, and discussions with scientists and expeditioners undertaking research and logistical support work on the continent.

Sir Peter’s visit to the Australian Antarctic Territory was only the second by a Governor-General.
