>live on the land, grow your own food, with no fucking bosses controlling you.

Ahahahaha, hopeless noob. You don't have any bosses except the weather, the markets, the irrigation company, the power bill, the custom applicators, the equipment companies, the petroleum suppliers, the seed companies, the tire store, your unruly illegal alien farm hands, the assessors office, the USDA, the EPA, the DEQ, the ditch rider, ADM, Cargill, Dreyfus, Bunge, the Bank, the Farm Bureau, the Extension Office, the insurance companies and your own lazy kids.

You can get there, but you have to start very young and be able to do shit you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy for 18hrs/day for 50 or 60 years with no vacations, no travel, no luxuries, all the while living in a clapped out farm house overrun with mice, rats and spiders.

If you insist on this, marry a rich farmers daughter and inherit the shit, you might make it.

>Do something else then

I am doing something else. I'm passing out red pills to hopeless noobs. I did forget to mention the skin cancer, the cataracts and the inevitable injuries you have to live with as part of the job.

Oh yeah, you can't retire. Ever. The work never ends and no one is going to help you.Maybe your kids will help you stack wood once a year, if you can get them to come home.

>You seem to have had a very bad experience of farm life.

Nah, I love it. Had a herd of girls who all turned out well but had no interest in farming or ranching. None of the young men in our little (1,500) community (no stop lights/signs) caught their eye and sending them off to college really distances them from the land.

The grand children and great grand kids love it though. Turn 'em out in the morning, round 'em up at night. Nothing like a BB gun to occupy the time.

>You learn a lot of skills.

A LOT of skills, mad skills you share with everyone who ever lived with a shovel in one hand and one eye on the horizon.

Raising the kids in the country, where hard work is a given and consequences are real, among a community of shared values makes the whole thing worthwhile. The school bus taught them more about life than a graduate degree ever could.
