In Calif if stray livestock comes onto your property you are required to pen it and call the county Brand Inspector. Killing/eating it is not a legal option. Or better yet, read the brand and contact the owner and make them come haul it off. Open range law - people with livestock are not required to fence them in, but property owners are required to fence them OUT if you don't want strays grazing on you.
