Phoenix business leader, political adviser dies after setting himself on fire

Jul 25, 2018

Paul Lopez, a local business leader and Democratic adviser to several former Phoenix mayors, died Tuesday after setting himself on fire near a Phoenix church, reports said.

Lopez was founder and CEO of the Endeavor Agency, a public affairs company he ran for 27 years.

Phoenix Police said he set himself on fire at the Church for the Nations in Phoenix.

He was found in the parking lot with severe burns and was taken to a hospital in extremely critical condition, where he later died, according to a report by the Arizona Republic.

"Paul was a truly amazing man with a beautiful heart, contagious smile and boundless energy," the Lopez family said in a statement. "He had a quick wit and was very intelligent. He will always be remembered for his commitment to community service and social justice."

According to his LinkedIn page, he “lived, breathed and existed right at the intersection of business and government” as a public affairs strategist and corporate consultant.

Lopez served in an advisory role to four mayors, and was part of many local, state and federal candidate and initiative campaigns he helped lead, according to LinkedIn.

In 2011, he was co-chairman of Greg Stanton’s successful campaign for Phoenix mayor.

Lopez, an Arizona State University and University of Phoenix graduate, was named one of the Phoenix Business Journal’s “40 Under 40” business leaders in 2003. He also was a former member of Valley Leadership’s board and a current member of the Dougherty Foundation, an education trust for Arizona.

Estranged wife defends ousted Maricopa County Assessor Paul Petersen

"I DON'T BELIEVE HE DID ANYTHING WRONG"

Even though Raquel Petersen has filed for divorce, she is defending her husband. "I think someone wanted to make an example of him; I don't believe he did anything wrong," she said.

According to court paperwork, Paul Petersen faces more than 60 felony charges in three states. In Arizona, he's accused of illegally arranging for 28 pregnant women to fly here from the Marshall Islands and live in housing he owned.

Raquel explained to Arizona's Family how the criminal case against her husband has affected her and their kids.

Until a few months ago, she was the obscure wife of a relatively unknown politician. Today, she's best known as the silent woman behind the dark sunglasses walking through the airport, hand-in-hand with her husband, former Maricopa County Assessor Paul Petersen, following his stunning arrest on accusations of human trafficking.

"I know I don't garner that much sympathy. I know people look at me and say, 'She was either an idiot, or she was complicit,' but I only saw happy families," she said.
