Poland Dares Europe to Act Over Purge of Judges

Poland’s dispute with Europe over the country’s political purge of judges has turned into a game of chicken.

The European Union’s top court held a hearing on Monday as part of a bid by the European Commission to suspend Poland’s disciplinary regime for judges, which EU regulators have said undermines democracy. A decision could come within days.

The leadership in Warsaw is using the clash to reinforce support for the ruling Law & Justice party ahead of a presidential election in May. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki is ready to ignore the decision by the court in Luxembourg, according to a senior government official who asked not to be named.

Poland receives more aid on a net basis than any other EU member and is the paradigm of the post-Cold War integration project. Yet it’s become a lingering headache for a continent contending with issues ranging from an argument over its budget following the U.K.’s departure, a new wave of refugees landing in Greece and the coronavirus outbreak.

The standoff revolves around Poland’s overhaul of its justice system since Law & Justice took control in 2015. The five-year power grab, which could culminate next month if Law & Justice takes over the Supreme Court, has effectively given a single political party influence over the judiciary. A recent report by Sustainable Governance Indicators on rule of law put Poland only ahead of Turkey and Hungary among 41 EU and OECD countries.

Hillary Clinton says 'misogynistic' attacks on Greta Thunberg highlight 'double standard' for women

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton defended child environmental activist Greta Thunberg from what she called sexist attacks from people who disagree with her.

"I was so appalled to read about a sticker that had been made, depicting Greta Thunberg, the young woman who's been trying to sound the alarm about climate change, being literally subjected to a sexual assault," Clinton said Sunday on CNN's Fareed Zakaria GPS.

"I understand that we’re still fighting over climate change," she continued, "but to fight by objectifying and having a picture that demonstrated a level of violence toward this young 16-year-old girl, who has every right in the world to stand up and say, you know, world, you’re not doing what needs to be done, that’s misogynistic."

Clinton was referencing a cartoon sticker that was reportedly circulated among workers on oil fields belonging to a Canadian gas company X-Site Energy Services. The sticker depicted a man grabbing a girl with the name "Greta" on her back by the pigtails from behind.

“They are starting to get more and more desperate,” Thunberg responded in a tweet last week. "This shows that we’re winning.”

Alberta energy services company to 'correct our mistake' over explicit Greta Thunberg decal

An Alberta energy services company says its management accepts full responsibility for a decal the business distributed bearing its logo beneath a sexually suggestive cartoon appearing to depict 17-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg.

"This does not reflect the values of this company or our employees, and we deeply regret the pain we may have caused," X-Site Energy Services said in a statement on its website Monday.

The sticker had a black-and-white drawing of a female figure's bare back with hands pulling on her braided pigtails. The name "Greta" was written below. The company's logo was under the drawing.

The image unleashed a torrent of outrage after it began circulating online Wednesday. It prompted condemnations from Alberta Premier Jason Kenney, provincial cabinet ministers and members of the House of Commons.

"We are taking action to condemn this image and its publication and are committed to recovering and destroying the decals we distributed," X-Site's statement read.

"Management accepts full responsibility and, effective immediately, has made organizational changes to reflect this."

How ‘pandemic bonds’ are fueling coronavirus conspiracies

The coronavirus pandemic has been a magnet for countless conspiracy theories about its origins, its “real” fatality rate, and whether the whole thing is just a hoax to hurt President Donald Trump. But other than the standard-issue “big pharma is doing this to make money” conspiracies, none have ventured into the “rich cabal getting richer” territory that so many other plots land on.

From the sinking of the Titanic supposedly being a ruse to clear away opposition to the Federal Reserve to the “missing $2.3 trillion” of 9/11, most conspiracy theories eventually reveal that they’re really about the rich pulling strings, manipulating world events for profit.

Migrants seeking Europe wade through Evros River

Migrants heading for Europe waded across the Evros River in northwestern Turkey on Wednesday as they attempted to reach the land border with Greece.

The river, which is also known in Turkey as the Meriç or Maritsa River, runs through Turkey and along most of the frontier.

Thousands of migrants and refugees have attempted to cross into Greece in the past week after Turkey made good on a threat to stop preventing the flow.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's action triggered days of violent clashes and scenes of chaos between authorities and migrants at the land border.

Hundreds more migrants have headed to Greek islands from the nearby Turkish coast in dinghies.

One child died when the rubber dinghy he was in capsized off the coast of the Greek island of Lesbos earlier this week.

Defense team for Harvey Weinstein requests maximum of 5 years in prison for sex crimes convictions

Harvey Weinstein should be sent to prison for no more than five years, defense attorneys said in a letter to the judge ahead of sentencing scheduled for Wednesday.

The disgraced former Hollywood producer was convicted of two felony counts – criminal sexual assault and third-degree rape – for attacking former production assistant Mimi Haley in 2006 third-degree rape of aspiring actress Jessica Mann in 2013. He was acquitted of three additional counts – two counts of predatory sexual assault and one count of first-degree rape.

The defense said Weinstein’s age, health and life of charity are among the factors that argue for a lesser sentence. Weinstein, 67, who was convicted on Feb. 24, was moved from Bellevue Hospital Center in New York to Rikers Island correctional facility last week after undergoing a procedure to insert a stent in his heart. He had been using a walker throughout the trial and was being held in a prison ward at Bellevue after complaining of chest pains.

Turkey's Erdogan says U.S. softening stance on purchase of Patriot systems

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said that the United States was softening its stance on a potential sale of U.S. Patriot defense systems, adding that Washington had asked Ankara to guarantee it will not activate Russian S-400 defense systems.

“We made this offer to the United States on the Patriot: If you are going to give us Patriots, then do it. We can also buy Patriots from you,” Erdogan told reporters on a return flight from Brussels. “They also softened significantly on this S-400 issue. They are now at the point of ‘promise us you won’t make the S-400s operational’,” he added.

Self-help guru requests new trial in sex-trafficking case

The leader of a cult-like self-improvement group that attracted heiresses and Hollywood actresses is requesting a new trial in his sex-trafficking case.

A jury convicted Keith Raniere in June on all counts of sex-trafficking and coercing women into sex. He and his lawyers filed a motion Monday in Brooklyn federal court for a new trial, arguing that two witnesses perjured themselves when they denied they were planning to sue him after the trial.

The two women who testified at Raniere’s trial are part of an 80-plaintiff lawsuit filed in January against Raniere and members of the group’s top leadership, according to the motion. Some plaintiffs claim they were recruited as sex slaves and were forced to have Raniere’s initials branded on their bodies.

NXIVM

Attorney Neil Glazer, who represents the two women, told the New York Post they did not initially intend to join the lawsuit but changed their minds after they saw how much evidence was revealed during the trial.

Raniere ran a once-thriving organization based in Albany, New York, called NXIVM, pronounced NEHK-see-uhm. Raniere was accused of turning his female devotees into his sex slaves through shame, punishment and nude blackmail photos.

His adherents included actress Allison Mack of TV’s “Smallville”; an heiress to the Seagram’s liquor fortune, Clare Bronfman; and a daughter of TV star Catherine Oxenberg of “Dynasty” fame.

Raniere is scheduled to be sentenced on April 16. He is set to receive a 15-year mandatory minimum sentence and could get up to life in prison.
