clathrates

frozen methane / water mix

the continental shelf is rife with deposits in that region.

When the water temp is low the pressure keeps the stuff as a waxy solid, but if water temps rise or other conditions change the clathrates can 'boil off' and turn back into methane gas creating a sea of bubbles that will sink any unfortunate vessel above it.
