Charity World Vision Australia underpaid staff

One of Australia's biggest charities has admitted to underpaying staff.

9News has revealed World Vision Australia reported itself to the Fair Work Ombudsman in December.

The charity has confirmed it owes 200 casuals and 45 permanent staff members money, and has set aside $8.9 million to pay them back.

World Vision Australia Acting Chief Executive Officer Graham Strong, said the underpayments were caused by an error in determining the correct award for employees.

"We apologise unreservedly for the error and have moved swiftly and decisively to rectify it," he said.

A statement from a Fair Work spokesperson said the Ombudsman "is aware of alleged underpayments and is conducting inquiries in relation to World Vision".

"Any workers with concerns about their pay should contact us directly," it said.

China to Provide Assistance to Italy, Ready to Send Experts to Fight COVID-19 - Minister

China will provide humanitarian assistance to Italy and is ready to send a team of specialists to assist the Italian side in combating the spread of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in a telephone conversation with his Italian counterpart Luigi Di Maio.

"We will not forget the support Italy provided to China at a difficult time for us during the epidemic. Now we are also ready to stand firmly next to the Italian people. Despite the fact that China itself has a great need for medical supplies, we will overcome difficulties and will provide Italy with humanitarian aid in the form of medical masks and other necessary medical supplies", Wang said.

"We will boost exports of necessary goods and equipment to Italy", he said.

Wang said that if the Italian side needed, China was ready to send a group of medical experts to help combat the spread of the virus.

More than 100,000 people have already been infected with COVID-19 in the world, the majority have recovered, and about 4,000 have died. The coronavirus outbreak was first registered in December 2019 in China's Wuhan. In Europe, the most coronavirus-affected country is Italy.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte introduced earlier tough measures, including movement restriction due to an outbreak of the novel coronavirus.

More than 9,100 COVID-19 cases have been registered in Italy; 724 people have already recovered, 463 have died.

Judges took 'terribly damaging wrong route' in Pell ruling, High Court told

Victoria’s Court of Appeal embarked on a “terribly damaging wrong route,’’ by requiring Cardinal George Pell to prove it was impossible for him to have sexually abused two choirboys after Sunday Mass, the High Court was told on Wednesday.

As Pell's case began its ultimate hearing, his counsel Bret Walker, SC, told Australia's highest court the approach taken by the majority of the Court of Appeal had reversed the onus of proof and misapplied the “essential requirement” for establishing guilt in a criminal trial.

In a hearing before all seven justices of the court in Canberra, Mr Walker took the judges to key parts of the evidence which he says must have given the jurors reasonable doubt, an opinion one of the three Court of Appeal supported.

These include Pell’s practice, when Archbishop of Melbourne in December 1996, of standing on the steps of St Patrick’s Cathedral after Sunday Mass to greet parishioners and the “hive of activity” that surrounded the priests’ sacristy at the time the abuse is said to have occurred.

The Court of Appeal was split over whether this evidence was strong enough to overcome the credible testimony given by the sole surviving choirboy, the only witness who supported the allegations against Pell.

The other choirboy, who denied he was abused, died before Pell was charged.

Ex-Police Chief Gets 10 Years For ‘Despicable’ Acts While Brandishing Gun

The former Acting Police Chief of Olney, Texas was sentenced today to 10 years in federal prison for threatening an individual at gunpoint, announced U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas Erin Nealy Cox.

Former Acting Chief Robert Michael Cross, 35, pleaded guilty in October to deprivation of rights under color of law following an investigation by the FBI’s Dallas Field Office.

“The city of Olney deserves police officers with respect for the rule of law,” said U.S. Attorney Nealy Cox. “Instead, this defendant abused his power, stripping citizens of their dignity for his own perverse ends. We are gratified he has been held to account for his despicable behavior.”

“Law enforcement officers are responsible for upholding the law and protecting their communities from harm. The defendant used his position of authority to prey on vulnerable individuals and exploit them for his personal gain,” said FBI Dallas Special Agent in Charge Matthew J. DeSarno. “The FBI is committed to preserving trust in law enforcement. We will criminally pursue any officer that violates the law and abuses their oath to protect and serve.”

In plea papers and in other information provided in court, Mr. Cross admitted that shortly after arresting two individuals for aggravated robbery offenses, he coerced them into engaging in conduct for his own personal benefit, promising to have the criminal cases against them dismissed if they complied with his demands.

About a month after the arrest, on Dec. 20, 2017, he took them out in his vehicle to eat dinner and catch a movie. That evening, he brandished a pistol, threatening one victim with bodily injury and coercing the victim to engage in sex acts with another individual, thereby willfully depriving the victim of the Constitutional right to be free from unreasonable force by a law enforcement officer.

Cross also has been accused in a separate case of telling a woman in early 2018 that if she would be his “chore slave” and “belong to him,” he would let her husband out of jail, according to the Dallas Morning News.
