Trump considers declaring national disaster for coronavirus: Report

President Trump is reportedly considering a national disaster declaration for the coronavirus outbreak to free up funds. A source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Wednesday that Trump was weighing the option, which under the Stafford Act could make up to $40 billion available in immediate aid for his administration's efforts to combat the virus.

At least 1,050 people in the United States have been diagnosed with the COVID-19 virus, resulting in 31 deaths as of Wednesday afternoon. Globally, more than 120,000 people have been infected, and at least 4,373 have died. The World Health Organization declared the outbreak a global pandemic, and many countries are implementing strict measures to stop the spread of the quickly spreading illness. On Monday, Italy announced that it was locking down its entire country of about 60 million people.

Maxine Waters: Trump needs to 'shut his mouth' about coronavirus

Rep. Maxine Waters called President Trump a liar and said he should leave talk about the coronavirus outbreak to health professionals in his administration. "It's been said over and over again that you cannot trust this president," Waters told reporters Wednesday. "Not only is he a lair, he does not believe in anything scientific."

Since the outbreak of the virus has reached the United States, Trump has sought to quell fears that the situation has gotten out of control. "Our CoronaVirus Team has been doing a great job," Trump tweeted this week. "Even Democrat governors have been VERY complimentary!"

Waters, a Democrat, was not one of them. "The president of the United States cannot be relied upon," she said. "Someone said he needs to be quiet, he needs to shut his mouth. And he should do that and allow CDC, NIH, and others to deal with this issue and help us through it." The World Health Organization declared the virus a pandemic on Wednesday. So far, there have been 1,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the U.S. The death toll as risen to 31.

Senate Democrat wants investigation into possible bias of federal agencies in Hunter Biden requests

Sen. Chris Murphy has requested an investigation into whether federal agencies are showing political bias by cooperating with Republican requests related to Hunter Biden. The Connecticut Democrat sent a letter to the inspectors general for the State Department, the Department of Homeland Security, the Treasury Department, and the National Archives on Wednesday, expressing concern about possible double standards in the agencies complying with the requests. “I am deeply concerned that the National Archives and the Departments of State, Treasury, and Homeland Security may not be applying a consistent test regarding inquiries made by Congress, choosing to comply with requests that are designed to damage the president’s political opponents, but refusing to comply with requests into the activities of the president,” he wrote, requesting the agencies respond by March 23.

Murphy asked that the inspectors general explain whether their agencies complied with any congressional requests related to Biden or Burisma, the extent of their cooperation, and if the agencies cooperated with congressional requests relating to Trump. The letter was dated the same day the Senate Homeland Security Committee is set to vote to subpoena a former Ukrainian diplomat Andrii Telizhenko, who was a consultant for Blue Star Strategies, which was a representative for Burisma Holdings in the United States.

Biden was on the board of Burisma, a Ukrainian gas company, while his father Joe Biden was leading the Obama administration’s Ukraine policy. Chairman Ron Johnson announced the investigation as the former vice president’s chances of winning the Democratic presidential nomination increased after his victory in South Carolina. With his wins since then, Biden has become the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.
