Engineers crack 58-year-old enigma, make quantum breakthrough

A team of engineers in Australia has cracked a problem that has stood for more than half a century.

In 1961, scientist and Nobel Laureate Nicolaas Bloembergen had suggested that the nucleus of a single atom could be controlled using only electric fields. Now, the engineers at the University of New South Wales Sydney have achieved just that.

"This discovery means that we now have a pathway to build quantum computers using single-atom spins without the need for any oscillating magnetic field for their operation," said Andrea Morello, UNSW's scientia professor of quantum engineering, in a statement. "Moreover, we can use these nuclei as exquisitely precise sensors of electric and magnetic fields, or to answer fundamental questions in quantum science."

Quantum computing, which lets computers manipulate information in extremely sophisticated ways, aims to provide more powerful computing than current supercomputers.

The research is described in a paper in the journal Nature.

The discovery was made by accident, according to the University of New South Wales, which explains that the researchers were originally attempting to perform magnetic resonance on a single atom of the chemical element antimony. "However, once we started the experiment, we realized that something was wrong. The nucleus behaved very strangely, refusing to respond at certain frequencies, but showing a strong response at others," said Dr. Vincent Mourik, also a lead author on the paper, in a statement. "This puzzled us for a while, until we had a 'eureka moment' and realized that we were doing electric resonance instead of magnetic resonance."

Scientists note that generating magnetic fields requires large coils and high currents and that the fields are difficult to confine to small spaces. Electric fields, however, can be produced at the tip of a tiny electrode, enabling atoms to be easily controlled in nanoelectronic devices.

The discovery could pave the way to “scalable, nuclear- and electron-spin-based quantum computers in silicon that operate without the need for oscillating magnetic fields,” according to the paper.

Yep Dick’s is run by Dicks, they must be praying their company fails. Wouldn’t be surprised if some on the inside want this company to go bankrupt or they want out! But why

Dick's Sporting Goods pulling hunting gear from 440 more locations

Dick’s Sporting Goods has announced plans to remove the hunting departments from “approximately” 440 additional locations, following a similar — albeit much smaller — effort last year.

In a press release issued Tuesday along with the company’s fourth-quarter earnings report, Dick’s confirmed that it would be removing the hunting departments sometime “in fiscal 2020,” though there was no specific time frame announced.

Dick’s also declined to say which stores, in particular, would be affected.

The company had previously removed guns and ammunition from 125 of its locations roughly one year ago, after Dick’s first announced it would no longer be selling assault-style weapons — at any of its locations — in the wake of the tragic Parkland school shooting.

The stores also raised the age requirement for gun purchases to 21.

At the time, gun and ammunition manufacturers including O.F. Mossberg and Sons, Inc., and MKS Supply, announced they would no longer be doing business with Dick’s.

These moves apparently had little effect on the company’s sales, however, as Dick’s chairman and CEO reported “strong fourth quarter results” in the latest earnings report, as well as “growth across each of our three primary categories of hardlines, apparel and footwear.”

The company’s shares also jumped 12.2 percent in Tuesday premarket trading, Fox Business reported.

"During 2019, we made meaningful changes across our business, which fueled our strongest annual comp sales gain since 2012 and a 14-percent increase in non-GAAP earnings per diluted share over 2018,” said Dick’s chairman and CEO Edward W. Stack. “I'd like to thank all our teammates for their hard work and commitment to DICK'S Sporting Goods, which made this performance possible.

A representative for Dick’s Sporting Goods was not immediately available to comment.

The company currently operates 726 total stores in 47 states, as well as 94 Golf Galaxy locations and 27 Field & Stream stores.

Its gotta be something to impress a General of his stature, to receive the Medal if Freedom from POTUS, a real testament to our Q+

Gen. Jack Keane on receiving Presidential Medal of Freedom: 'This was really off the charts

Fox News senior strategic analyst Jack Keane, a retired four-star Army general, told "Bill Hemmer Reports" Wednesday that receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Trump was "overwhelming" and "emotionally gripping."

"I've never had an experience like that ever," he said. "I've been at a lot of awards ceremonies – mostly giving out awards … This was really off the charts; walking in with the president of the United States [to] a room full of people standing up and applauding."

Hemmer recalled Keane's service in Vietnam and his presence at the Pentagon when it was attacked on Sept. 11, 2001, among other key events in his life.

Keane acknowledged that Trump once asked him to be secretary of defense, but Keane turned down the offer due to the recent death of his wife.

Instead, Keane said his relationship with Trump became that of an informal adviser, and the two took a simulated "trip around the world" – discussing issues in various countries and their own relationship with America.

As we walked around the world, we had a connection and a relationship," Keane said. "So from time to time, I would provide him some counsel. We didn't always agree on things. He has an open mind. He welcomes contrarian views. He is a great listener. He hears you out

During Tuesday's ceremony, Trump said that Keane "has given me a lot of good advice" and described him as "a visionary, a brilliant strategist and an American hero."

Keane also recalled receiving a phone call from Trump with the word that he would be awarded the nation's highest civilian honor.

"I said, 'Mr. President. I don't think I deserve this.' He laughed and said, 'You know, one of my guys told me you are going to say that today,'" Keane remarked.

"He said, 'General, you deserve it. We are going to get this done.'"

Born in New York City, Keane graduated from Fordham University and receive a master's degree from Western Kentucky University. He also attended the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pa., and the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas.

In a statement last week, the White House called Keane a "well-respected foreign policy and national security expert" who "devoted his life to keeping America safe and strong."

Keane retired from military service in 2003 but has since served as an informal adviser to presidents and other top U.S. officials. In addition to his role with Fox News, he is also the chairman of the board of the Institute for the Study of War.

Fake immigration attorney charged with filing hundreds of fraudulent asylum claims for migrants

A Florida man is accused of filing more than 200 fraudulent asylum applications for migrants while posing as a fake immigration attorney, prosecutors announced Wednesday.

Elvis Harold Reyes, 56, of Brandon, was charged Monday with mail fraud, making false statements in immigration documents, and aggravated identity theft, according to a press release from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Prosecutors said Reyes owned and operated EHR Ministries Inc., while portraying himself as an immigration attorney (despite having never been a licensed attorney), pastor, accountant, immigration expert, former immigration officials, and former federal law enforcement officer.

According to the indictment, Reyes targeted undocumented immigrants from Spanish-speaking countries in Florida who were seeking driver licenses and work authorization. He allegedly gave false or incompletely legal and immigration advice so the victims would retain his services.

Prosecutors said victims paid Reyes to represent them in immigration-related matters before the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and other agencies.

Reyes allegedly filed fake immigration applications in the victims’ names, seeking asylum relief and withholding-of-removal protections. The applications were filled out with fabricated stories about threats, persecution, and the applicants’ supposed fear of returning to their native countries, prosecutors said.

Reyes allegedly did not inform the victims of the answers he gave on their behalf, nor did he inform them about the legal ramifications of filing false asylum claims.

ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) believes there may be more victims. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the department at 1-866-347-2423.
