So, what did I miss about corona virus in the last day that requires all the big action?

From what I understand, in China, things have gotten better. Is there something different about corona virus that is different from other illnesses? We've had illnesses all along. And the economy didn't stop and all shit like NCAA Basketball didn't stop. Am I missing something? The winter is cold and flu season, therefore, NBA is just out of business? I'm just missing why this is all that different.

If they close down the NBA, it's really difficult to justify a lot of the everyday economic activity. Grade schools stay open but NBA is closed?
