Coronavirus strikes in the Capitol: Senate aide tests positive with symptoms
A Senate aide in Washington, D.C., has tested positive for the coronavirus and is showing symptoms.
Sen. Maria Cantwell, a Democrat from Washington state, which has been an epicenter for the coronavirus, said in a statement Wednesday that she has closed her D.C. office “for deep cleaning” and has requested testing for staff who have been in contact with the infected individual and show symptoms.
According to Cantwell, the staffer with the coronavirus “has had no known contact with the senator or other members of Congress.”
The announcement comes as lawmakers in Congress are increasingly anxious about working in the Capitol, which is typically packed with employees, media, and tourists.
The virus is most deadly for the elderly, and many lawmakers are over age 70.
House and Senate officials decided Wednesday to suspend Capitol tours, and lawmakers have been in discussions about how to work remotely if needed. The House and Senate cannot vote on legislation unless lawmakers are physically present.
