George Pell appeal decision delayed by High Court

The High Court has delayed its final verdict in Cardinal George Pell's appeal against his child sexual abuse convictions.

Pell, who remains Australia's most senior Catholic clergyman, was hoping the High Court would free him from prison.

But he will have to wait for the verdict, with the court reserving its decision.

The delay could take several months, as the High Court in Canberra considers the appeal.

The Victorian Court of Appeal upheld the conviction in a two-to-one decision.

Today the prosecutor faced intense questioning over a video of one of the victims' testimony to jurors.

Pell's lawyers have argued that the victim showed inconsistencies in his testimony.

They have said it was wrong for the Court of Appeals to view the video, arguing his demeanour swayed their views on his testimony.

Pell was jailed in 2018 for six years after being found guilty of molesting two choirboys in December 1996.

He is the senior-most member of the Catholic church internationally to be convicted on child sexual offences.

If his appeal is unsuccessful, he will be eligible for parole in 2022.

Tom Cotton: Coronavirus Outbreak Is ‘Moment of Reckoning’ Between U.S. and China

The coronavirus outbreak presents a “moment of reckoning” for the United States in reevaluating its approach towards China, assessed Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) during an interview with Breitbart News Editor-in-Chief Alex Marlow on Thursday’s edition of SiriusXM’s Breitbart News Daily.

Marlow noted the myriad of political issues related to viral outbreak, from national immigration, industrial, and manufacturing policies. He highlighted America’s dependence on Chinese exports of generic and over-the-counter drugs.

“We are now largely dependent on China having outsourced so much of our pharmaceutical manufacturing for basic pharmaceutical ingredients, like Tylenol or Advil,” Cotton stated. “They feel empowered to threaten our people if we hurt their feelings, if we extend the travel ban. So we have to have the immediate response to the Wuhan coronavirus, but this is a moment of reckoning in which we will have a far-reaching reevaluation of our relationship with China.”

China could effectively shut down America’s healthcare system within months given the one-party state’s “global chokehold” on the manufacturing of medicines and medical supplies, explained Rosemary Gibson, author of China Rx: Exposing the Risks of America’s Dependence on China for Medicine, to Breitbart News in February.

Attitudes towards China among politicians, particularly Republicans, are changing as a result of President Donald Trump, determined Cotton.

“I can tell you that increasingly people are now awake to this threat [from China],” Cotton remarked. “President Trump has done very good job with, frankly, Republicans in Washington over the last four years to make them think a little bit less like corporate managers a little bit more like American patriots first. We made a lot of wrong turns with China over the last 30 years. Now’s the time to fix that, and it’s time to fix it urgently.”

Cotton considered calibrating federal government policy to promote domestic production of medicines towards lessening U.S. dependence on Chinese pharmaceutical exports.

“f you are engaged, for instance, in manufacturing basic pharmaceutical ingredients in China, I suggest to you that you need to pack up and get out, and if you don’t do it quickly, then the U.S. government may do it for you,” Cotton stated.

Asked by Marlow about Congress’s next moves in addressing the coronavirus threat, Cotton replied, “One thing I’m working on particularly is trying to get Deb Fischer’s legislation that would provide many more masks for our healthcare professionals across the finish line this week. This bill should have passed last week as part of our supplemental bill.”

Democrats are prioritizing trial lawyers over health and safety for healthcare professionals, Cotton said.

“Sen. Fisher has been working on it from the very beginning when we learned that we might face a mask shortage in this country as early as late April, [and] unfortunately the Democrats objected,” Cotton stated. “They put the request of ambulance-chasing trial lawyers to have jackpot justice lawsuits down the road ahead of the safety of our great doctors and nurses.”

Cotton warned that Democrats may seek to include irrelevant spending within coronavirus-related emergency funding legislation.

Pelosi Allegedly Tried To Strong Arm Trump Into Including Abortion Funding In Coronavirus Stimulus Plan

White House Officials Allege Speaker Pelosi Pushed To Include Hyde Amendment Loophole Into Coronavirus Stimulus Plan

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi sought to include a potential way to guarantee federal funding for abortion into the coronavirus economic stimulus plan, according to multiple senior White House officials.

Speaking to the Daily Caller, those officials alleged that while negotiating the stimulus with U.S. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, Pelosi tried to lobby for “several” provisions that stalled bipartisan commitment to the effort. One was a mandate for up to $1 billion to reimburse laboratory claims, which White House officials say would set a precedent of health spending without protections outlined in the Hyde Amendment.

The Hyde Amendment blocks clinics that perform abortions from receiving federal funding, and Democrats have pushed the Trump administration to end it since he was elected in 2016.

“A new mandatory funding stream that does not have Hyde protections would be unprecedented,” one White House official explained. “Under the guise of protecting people, Speaker Pelosi is working to make sure taxpayer dollars are spent covering abortion — which is not only backwards, but goes against historical norms.”

A second White House official referred to the provision as a “slush fund” and yet another questioned “what the Hyde Amendment and abortion have to do with protecting Americans from coronavirus?”

Pelosi and Mnuchin were engaged in negotiations Thursday morning to finalize the text of the legislation.

Politico confirmed after this article went to press that the Hyde Amendment provision was eventually removed from the stimulus later on Thursday and will hit the House floor as a separate bill.

Despite Trump’s assurance that he would sign any stimulus bill that Congress approved, several Republicans rejected the stimulus offered by Pelosi and Mnuchin.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said Thursday morning he was totally opposed to Pelosi’s plan and wanted to draft a new proposal over the next 24-48 hours.

Pelosi pushed back on that suggestion during her Thursday press conference.

Escaping Pandemic: World’s Rich Head Off to Bunkers Amid the Outbreak of Coronavirus

The development comes as the World Health Organisation declared the outbreak a pandemic and a number of countries announced tough measures to combat the infectious disease. The United States has suspended travel from 26 European countries, while Italy has toughened a lockdown, closing all shops, except supermarkets and pharmacies.

The world’s super-rich across the globe are heading to doomsday bunkers to escape the pandemic of COVID-19, which has infected almost 130,000 people worldwide, The Guardian reported. According to the newspaper, the wealthy are using their private jets either to leave countries that have already been hit by the respiratory illness or head to their holiday homes and bunkers in countries that have no confirmed cases of the coronavirus.

According to Adam Twidell, chief executive of a global private jet charter company, his firm has been inundated with requests since the virus began spreading across the world. “Many are from groups which include elderly passengers or those with health conditions that make them particularly concerned about exposure to crowds on airline flights. In many cases, these are passengers who don’t usually fly by private aviation but are looking to protect themselves, their families, and employees”, Twidell said.

People, who are not rich enough to afford personal jets, request access to private lounges at airports in order to avoid the risk of interacting with large groups of passengers, The Guardian reported. In addition to increased demand for personal flights, there has been a rise in demand for disaster bunkers. Robert Vicino, founder and chief executive of California-based Vivos Group, which builds underground shelters that are able to withstand all kinds of natural disasters, said sales of bunkers had dramatically increased in recent months.

It is believed that in their attempt to escape the pandemic the world’s rich are travelling to their hideouts together with personal doctors and nurses, who will treat them and members of their family. According to The Guardian, many are besieging private clinics asking them for private tests for the coronavirus. Mark Ali, chief executive and medical director of the Private Harley Street Clinic, said the clinic has been inundated by requests from the wealthy. Ali said the clinic has given out a lot of flu vaccines and offered intravenous infusions of vitamins in order to boost people’s immune systems.

Meanwhile, the number of coronavirus cases outside China continues to grow, the latter is where the disease originated. US President Donald Trump has announced the suspension of travel from 26 European countries, while the Republic of Ireland said all schools and colleges in the country will be closed until 29 March due to the outbreak of COVID-19.

Congress Introduces Bill to Stop Imports of Chinese Goods Made by Muslim Slaves

Members of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC) introduced a bipartisan bill to ban all imports from western Xinjiang, China, on Wednesday, asserting it is impossible to keep items manufactured by Muslim slaves out of America otherwise.

The Chinese Communist Party has built hundreds of concentration camps in Xinjiang, its largest and westernmost province, in the past two years to imprison the region’s Muslims, the vast majority of which are members of the ethnic Uyghur majority indigenous to the region. China claims these camps are “vocational training centers” used to help unskilled Uyghurs develop talents that match jobs in the Chinese market. Uyghur survivors of the camps say they are used to kill, rape, torture, indoctrinate, and enslave them. Satellite images of the camps show that many are equipped with factories, where survivors say they are forced to work arduous hours manufacturing goods the Chinese government profits from for little to no money.

Chinese officials claimed that the Uyghurs enslaved in the camps had all “graduated” from “vocational training” in December. This month, a study by an Australian think tank revealed that “graduation” meant that large numbers of the estimated 1 million to 3 million imprisoned Uyghurs had been transferred nationwide by force to fill labor gaps in factories in other parts of the country.

The study found that 83 internationally operating companies – including American companies like Nike, Apple, and Gap – used factories featuring Uyghur slaves to manufacture products or components for products.

Introduced alongside the legislation, the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, the CECC published a report detailing the extent of the use of Uyghur slave labor in China and how difficult it is for a company to verify that the products they import from China were not built by slaves. The report accuses China of crimes against humanity, an international crime that any court in the world has jurisdiction to prosecute, and urges Congress to block all imports with ties to Xinjiang.

“The severe human rights abuses, torture, political indoctrination, forced renunciations of faith, and widespread and systematic forced labor occurring in mass internment camps may constitute crimes against humanity under international law,” the report concluded. “As this report details, forced labor exists both within the XUAR’s [Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region] system of mass internment camps, and throughout the region, and is confirmed by the testimony of former camp detainees, satellite imagery, and recently leaked Chinese government documents.”

The report listed carpets, cell phones, noodles, shoes, tea, and all sorts of clothing, housewares, and electronics among the products that China is forcing imprisoned Uyghurs to manufacture in captivity, while also being forced to endure communist indoctrination, abandon the principles of their Muslim faith, and learn Mandarin, a language that is not native to Xinjiang. Among the companies the commission concludes to be benefitting from this labor are Coca-Cola, Nike, Kraft Heinz, and Campbell Soup.

The report clearly states, “due diligence in Xinjiang is not possible.”

The Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act addresses the results of the report by banning all imports from Xinjiang unless a company can clearly prove that the products were not made by slaves. The burden of proof falls on the person or company trying to import an item from Xinjiang to offer “clear and convincing evidence” that the imports “were not produced wholly or in part by convict labor, forced labor, or indentured labor under penal sanctions.”
