Neurasthenia was a disease that was prescribed different cures for men than women. It was first noticed around 1829 then widespread 1869.The symptoms were we we know today as anxiety/depression.

The "experts" prescribed outdoor activities involving stupidly dangerous things (bareback riding bulls and such) for men. Bed rest and stay at home for woman.

Looking back today on that situation, it's laughable. The mental State of the Country caused the anxiety. We were becoming bitterly divided and ultimately entered into Civil War.
