Aussie newsagent bans cash over coronavirus fears

Customers have been left divided after the decision by a popular Melbourne newsagency to ban cash amid the coronavirus pandemonium.

From Monday, Newsxpress in Toorak will only accept bank cards in a bid to protect staff from contracting the disease.

Employee Anna Balsecchi said the move – announced on a sign at the front of the shop – was a "small step to minimise risk".

"I'm actually from Italy and my family is there and obviously the situation there is pretty crazy," she told A Current Affair.

"I guess if they knew before how it was going to end, they probably would have started better and bigger measures before – so we don't want to get to that point.

"It's great that our boss is so considerate and wants to protect us."

Local customer Lynette Stewart said she wouldn't be coming back to the store while the ban was in place.

"Unfortunately this might be my last paper I buy here for a while," she told A Current Affair.

Bill Gates Resigns From Microsoft Board

One hour after the close of another one of the most tumultuous weeks in Wall Street history, Bill Gates, the billionaire founder of Microsoft, resigned from the company's board.

Earlier today, Gates stepped down from the board of Berkshire Hathaway, the conglomerate run by his friend and fellow billionaire, Warren Buffett. Both men have been in the press a lot lately amid the market turmoil (Buffett) and viral panic (Gates).

Gates, who gave up the chairman role in 2014 and hasn't been the active leader of the company since 2008, stepped down from the board to dedicate more time to his philanthropic priorities.

He will continue to serve as Technology Advisor to CEO Satya Nadella and other Microsoft leaders.
