Chinese billionaire Jack Ma to donate 500,000 test kits and 1 million masks to US

'We join hands with Americans in these difficult times'

Chinese billionaire Jack Ma announced that his foundations "have sourced and readied for shipment 500,000 testing kits and 1 million masks to be donated to the United States" amid the spread of the coronavirus, in an effort to "help Americans fight against the pandemic."

What are the details?

Ma, who co-founded international trade site Alibaba, issued a statement Thursday saying that through a collaboration between his private foundation and his company's Alibaba Foundation, the organizations have already donated materials to Japan, Korea, Italy, Iran and Spain during the international fight against COVID-19.

The novel coronavirus sweeping the globe originated in China, Ma's homeland. The billionaire wrote, "Drawing from my own country's experience, speedy and accurate testing and adequate personal protective equipment for medical professionals are most effective in preventing the spread of the virus. We hope that our donation can help Americans fight against the pandemic!"

"This crisis presents a huge challenge to all human kind in a globalized world," Ma continued. "The pandemic we face today can no longer be resolved by any individual country. Rather, we need to combat the virus by working hand-in-hand. At this moment, we can't beat this virus unless we eliminate boundaries to resources and share our know-how and hard-earned lessons."

He added, "United we stand, divided we fall!"

Rosanne Barr Endorses Laura Loomer for Congress

Laura Loomer continues to pick up big endorsement after big endorsement for her bid for Congress in the great state of Florida.

Loomer has now picked up the endorsement of mega-celebrity turned truther Rosanne Barr.

Loomer and Barr are friends. Loomer says they bonded over the fact that she and Barr were both “deplatformed.”

Barr tweeted in May 2018 a “joke” where she referred to former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett as “planet of the apes,” which led to ABC ending her TV show Roseanne.

“Roseanne loved the fact that I put illegal aliens on Nancy Pelosi’s lawn, and that’s one of the reasons she put me on her podcast last year because she thought it was brilliant performance art.”

In October of the same year, Loomer was kicked off Twitter for criticizing Rep. Ilhan Omar as “anti-Jewish” and part of a religion in which “homosexuals are oppressed.”

“They’ve tried to destroy her livelihood and her reputation for making a joke. She used to be a member of the Left. but she realizes the importance of protecting free speech and our constitutional values like freedom of expression,” Loomer said about Barr.

Barr will begin campaigning with Loomer in Palm Beach, Florida, and will hold a fundraiser “as soon as the coronavirus passes.” Loomer confirmed to the Washington Examiner that her campaign has raised more than $400,000 to support her congressional bid.

Big Pharma Prepares to Profit From the Coronavirus

As the new coronavirus spreads illness, death, and catastrophe around the world, virtually no economic sector has been spared from harm. Yet amid the mayhem from the global pandemic, one industry is not only surviving, it is profiting handsomely.

“Pharmaceutical companies view Covid-19 as a once-in-a-lifetime business opportunity,” said Gerald Posner, author of “Pharma: Greed, Lies, and the Poisoning of America.” The world needs pharmaceutical products, of course. For the new coronavirus outbreak, in particular, we need treatments and vaccines and, in the U.S., tests. Dozens of companies are now vying to make them.

“They’re all in that race,” said Posner, who described the potential payoffs for winning the race as huge. The global crisis “will potentially be a blockbuster for the industry in terms of sales and profits,” he said, adding that “the worse the pandemic gets, the higher their eventual profit.”

The ability to make money off of pharmaceuticals is already uniquely large in the U.S., which lacks the basic price controls other countries have, giving drug companies more freedom over setting prices for their products than anywhere else in the world. During the current crisis, pharmaceutical makers may have even more leeway than usual because of language industry lobbyists inserted into an $8.3 billion coronavirus spending package, passed last week, to maximize their profits from the pandemic.

Initially, some lawmakers had tried to ensure that the federal government would limit how much pharmaceutical companies could reap from vaccines and treatments for the new coronavirus that they developed with the use of public funding. In February, Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., and other House members wrote to Trump pleading that he “ensure that any vaccine or treatment developed with U.S. taxpayer dollars be accessible, available and affordable,” a goal they said couldn’t be met “if pharmaceutical corporations are given authority to set prices and determine distribution, putting profit-making interests ahead of health priorities.”

DARPA's Pandemic Prevention Platform Could Develop Therapeutic "Shield" To Fight Covid-19 By Summer

The Pentagon's most secretive military research department is developing a therapeutic "shield" that could provide a new way to boost American's immunity to Covid-19, reported DefenseOne.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA) Pandemic Prevention Platform (PPP) is not in search of a vaccine against the fast-spreading virus that is now considered a pandemic, but rather is developing an advanced therapy that seeks to boost the immune system of people until an actual vaccine is developed. The result could prevent hospitals from being overwhelmed by sick people.

DARPA scientists working on PPP have been sequencing the B cells of a Covid-19 patient who has recovered. B cells, also known as B lymphocytes, are a type of white blood cell that produces antibodies that aid the immune system in its fight to fend off an invading microorganism.

"We are able to take a patient that has recovered from this pathogen [Covid-19], for example, and we are able to sequence many of their B cells. So those cells that make those antibodies that help protect you against those pathogens? We are now able to sequence all of those because of next-generation sequencing approaches," Dr. Amy Jenkins, manager of PPP, told DefenseOne.

If scientists can successfully sequence the B cells, they could create a new therapy with a "manufacturing timeline" in a little over three months, Jenkins said. It would buy some time, considering a proven vaccine is 12-18 months away.
