Google-Funded Think Tank Chief Resigns After Wishing Coronavirus Would Kill Trump
The head of a Google-funded think tank is resigning after suggesting to his Twitter followers that he would like to see President Donald Trump die from coronavirus, Politico reported Friday. TechFreedom president Berin Szóka is going on an indefinite sabbatical to write a book on tech policy, the libertarian-leaning group told Politico. Szóka got into some hot water Monday after saying on Twitter that it would be “poetic justice” for Trump to die from the deadly virus. “Serious question: could there possibly any greater poetic justice in the universe than for Trump to die of the #CPACvirus,” Szóka tweeted in reference to Trump’s presence at the Conservative Political Action Conference.
One person who attended CPAC tested positive for the virus. Szóka apologized several days after sharing the tweet. “Earlier this week, I sent a thoughtless tweet making an inappropriate comment about the President that I deeply regret,” he tweeted Thursday. “I was wrong to tweet it and deleted it. Again, I apologize.”
TechFreedom is linked to billionaire Charles Koch and gets funding from Google. Szóka has a reputation for being a dogged supporter of Silicon Valley and a fierce opponent of conservatives who are attempting to reform a law that protects tech companies from being sued for content posted on their platforms. His decision to step down comes at an awkward time for TechFreedom. Szóka’s tweet came on the same day The Washington Post included him as an expert in their Techology 202 Network.
Several Republican lawmakers have self-quarantined after being exposed to the CPAC attendee who was infected with the coronavirus. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz, for instance, decided to self-isolate after coming into contact with the unnamed person.

Think Tank Complains “Coronavirus Is Killing Globalization as We Know It”
Says it’s been a “gift to nationalists.”
The founder of a globalist think tank has written an article for Foreign Policy in which he complains that the coronavirus outbreak is “killing globalization as we know it.” Philippe Legrain, founder of the Open Political Economy Network (OPEN) says that the spread of COVID-19 “has been a gift to nativist nationalists and protectionists.” Legrain argues that coronavirus could be “the nail in the coffin for the current era of globalization” because it has “highlighted the downsides of extensive international integration while fanning fears of foreigners and providing legitimacy for national restrictions on global trade and flows of people.” He adds that the crisis will have a lasting impact on undermining America’s reliance on international supply chains and provide “political fodder for nationalists who favor greater protectionism and immigration controls.” “The coronavirus crisis threatens to usher in a less globalized world,” concludes Legrain. “Once the pandemic and panic abate, those who believe that openness to people and products from around the world is generally a good thing will need to make the case for it in fresh and persuasive ways.”
Foreign Policy is published by The Washington Post Company (now Graham Holdings Company) and has a distinctly globalist bias. Legrain’s point that coronavirus has provided legitimacy for restrictions of flows of people is borne out by the fact that countries like Russia and Singapore, which imposed strong border controls to stop COVID-19 back in January, have largely escaped the worst of pandemic. In his latest column, conservative icon Pat Buchanan also highlights how coronavirus has served to expose the weaknesses of globalization. “It may one day be said that the coronavirus delivered the deathblow to the New World Order, to a half-century of globalization and to the era of interdependence of the world’s great nations,” writes Buchanan.
