Copied from a FB post:

Time for a little perspective. All this talk of gun control relating to rifles is such a waste of time. Why is the news media, democrats/liberals, etc spending so much time, money, energy, and political capital for enacting such insignificant laws for an insignificant problem?

The insignificant problem:

per FBI statistics all rifle related deaths amounts to less than 400 per year. That includes deaths due to suicide, accident, and murder. It also includes rifles of all type, single shot, bolt action, hunting, and the oh so scary AR15. So, murder deaths by an AR15 is a small number of a small number. This is quite possibly the least likely way to die in America. Why spend such extreme time, money, energy, and political capital on such a tiny problem?

The insignificant solutions:

Ban bump stocks. It's only been used once so not really the preferred accessory of would be killers. Increase rate of fire but only for a short burst at a time because barrels available to civilians are not up to withstand the heat of extended rapid fire. Can be bought on black market or 3D printed if banned. Effectiveness of a ban small potatoes.

Banning 30 round capacity magazines. So carrying 3 10 round ones is not really a problem and exchanging magazines is not much of delay. Also, available on black market and 3D printable. Effectiveness of ban pretty slim.

Raising age to 21. Besides the obvious age discrimination most of these killers obtained their weapons illegally anyway whether they were under or over 21. And most were not in this 18-21 age range. Effectiveness of age change small.

Background checks. Well, we have background checks. 2 recent killers were able of pass due to authorities allowing them to pass. And illegally obtained weapons would not be subject to this. Effectiveness small.

The security officer in the MD school saved more lives in that one incident than any of these proposed laws could save in many years. I bet requiring gas stations to clean restrooms more often will save more lives per year.

There you have it. Political leaders and media personalities stirring a major frenzy, spending massive amounts of time, money, energy, and political capital to solve an insignificant problem with insignificant solutions. Why? The people gain so little from these actions while losing rights. There are so many more significant issues to pursue than this. Makes no sense at all. Why????
