Coronavirus lockdown helps Italian police nab 'leading' mobster

 

Rome (AFP) - A top 'Ndrangheta clan member was arrested in Italy after police, helped by the anti-coronavirus lockdown, spotted the fugitive smoking inside a seemingly deserted safe house, authorities said Friday.

 

Cesare Cordi, described by police as a "leading figure of the 'Ndrangheta of Locri" in southern Calabria, had been on the run since August, when a judge issued a warrant for the 42-year-old's arrest.

 

Thanks to the empty streets and stay-at-home orders imposed throughout the country due to the coronavirus risk, the police, who had been tracking Cordi for days, found him at a house in the town of Bruzzano Zeffirio, at the tip of Italy's boot, late on Thursday.

 

"The faint glow of a cigarette – caught through the crack of a shutter – was enough to give the carabinieri the certainty that in that house was the wanted man," the police of the province of Reggio Calabria, who staged the raid, said in a statement.

The boss of Italian mob 'Ndrangheta has been captured thanks to the country's coronavirus quarantine, after empty streets enabled police to spot cigarette smoke coming from his hideout.

 

Cesare Antonio Cordì, the 42-year-old boss of the gang based in Calabria, Italy, was caught out by the government's 'stay at home' order after clear streets led police to inspect suspicious activity on uninhabited land.

 

Hiding in an abandoned house in the isolated district of Bruzzano Zeffirio, a small town in the Locride area of Calabria, mobster Cordì was betrayed by his own cigarette smoke seen emerging from the building.

164 Israelis infected with coronavirus, over 38,000 in quarantine

 

The Health Ministry reported on Saturday that 164 Israelis were infected with the coronavirus and that 38,560 people are in home quarantine.

On Friday, the ministry confirmed that 2,479 healthcare workers had entered quarantine and 147 people were infected with the virus..

 

Three patients who tested positive are in critical condition, according to the ministry.

Some 1,174 hospital workers are in quarantine, as well as 171 MDA employees, 24 IDF healthcare workers, 93 psychiatrists, 128 geriatric care workers, 106 east Jerusalem healthcare workers, 20 administrative workers and 763 community staff, as of Friday.

Furthermore, the ministry reported that 949 doctors, 635 nurses, 127 assistants, 81 lab technicians, 64 logistic workers, 40 administrators, 83 pharmacists, 14 dietitians, 31 social workers, 108 physiotherapists, 171 paramedics and 176 others have entered quarantine.

Two of the coronavirus patients are in serious condition, five are in moderate condition and 119 are in fair condition. The others have recovered and been released.

The Health Ministry shared the epidemiology of many of the sick patients Friday morning, including four new cases - siblings between the ages of six and 18 - who had been in "close contact with a known coronavirus patient." These four, numbered patients 119-122, have gone to their respective schools and preschools before being put into isolation, those being the Orot school in the town of Or Yehuda, and the Tzivoni and Dekel kindergarden, as well as the Ulpana Tzfira.
