Long Island Woman Sentenced to 13 Years’ Imprisonment for Providing Material Support to ISIS

Earlier today, in federal court in Central Islip, Zoobia Shahnaz was sentenced to 13 years’ imprisonment by United States District Judge Joanna Seybert for providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization, specifically more than $150,000 to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), and attempting to travel to Syria to join ISIS. Shahnaz pleaded guilty in November 2018.

John C. Demers, Assistant Attorney General for National Security, Richard P. Donoghue, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, William F. Sweeney, Jr., Assistant Director-in-Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation, New York Field Office (FBI), and Dermot F. Shea, Commissioner, New York City Police Department (NYPD), announced the sentence.

As set forth in court filings and facts presented at the sentencing hearing, between March 2017 and July 2017, Shahnaz defrauded numerous financial institutions to obtain money for ISIS, including a loan for approximately $22,500. Shahnaz also fraudulently obtained more than a dozen credit cards and used them to purchase approximately $62,000 in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies online. Shahnaz then made multiple wire transfers totaling more than $150,000 to individuals and entities in Pakistan, China and Turkey that were fronts for ISIS

Illinois Mayor May Ban Guns, Firearms Sales Over Coronavirus Panic

An Illinois mayor has signed an executive order taking up wide-ranging emergency powers that she claims gives her the authority to halt the sale of all firearms and ammunition. The declaration is being framed as a response to the Chinese coronavirus.

Champaign, Illinois Mayor Deborah Frank Feinen signed the declaration Friday morning. The executive order declares a state of emergency in the city, and gives the mayor a wide set of powers to use during the period. The declaration touches upon a wide range of commercial and civic activity as liable to the mayor’s shutdown.

The document uses the phrasing of giving the mayor power to “Order the discontinuance of selling, distributing, dispensing or giving away of explosives or explosive agents, firearms or ammunition of any character whatsoever.”

MANILA – The Philippines has become the first Southeast Asian country to impose a mandatory lockdown of its national capital, Manila, as fears of an epidemic rise with a sudden surge in new coronavirus cases.

On March 12, President Rodrigo Duterte announced that Metro-Manila, among the most densely populated capitals on earth with over 12 million residents, will be under “community quarantine” from at least March 15 to April 14.

The designation bans mass gatherings, including presumably church services, and mandates government office and school closures. The order encourages the private sector to adopt flexible work arrangements and strict social distancing, with manufacturing, retail and service businesses advised to continue operations.

Public transport will also remain operational during the lockdown period.

MANILA – Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s decision to scrap a key security pact with the United States will be challenged at the nation’s highest court, a legal maneuever that could have major implications for regional security and balance of power politics.

In a rare bipartisan move, the Senate’s majority and minority leaders petitioned the Supreme Court to rule on the legality of Duterte’s unilateral abrogation of the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA), which provides a legal framework for the rotational stationing of US troops and equipment on Philippine soil.

Duterte’s cancellation of the 20-year-old pact, which is scheduled to take effect on August 9, threatens to undermine the legal standing of the two sides’ 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT) and will inevitably hamper the US’s strategic position vis-à-vis China, most notably in the hotly contested South China Sea.

Guatemala becomes first country to ban Americans to stop coronavirus

March 14 (UPI) – Guatemala has become the first country to ban Americans in an effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus as nations across the globe close down borders and implement up travel restrictions and curfews.

President Alejandro Giammattei announced Friday night that Americans would not be allowed into the country beginning Monday.

"We have made the decision that citizens of the United States and Canada cannot enter the country," Giammattei said in a news conference, referring to the rising number of cases in those countries.

The move, which he called a "phase of containment," also includes banning nationals from several European and Asian countries.

Israel coronavirus cases climb to 164; nearly 40,000 in quarantine

21 new infections confirmed on Saturday as government said set to announce new restrictions in bid to contain spread

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Israel climbed to 164 on Saturday, up 21 from Friday, with nearly 40,000 currently in home quarantines according to the Israeli Health Ministry. Of those with the virus, two are still in serious condition, 10 are in moderate condition, and four have recovered.

Israel has seen no deaths from the virus.

Of the 164 confirmed cases, 124 people have been hospitalized with 27 receiving medical care at home. Some 38,000 are in self-quarantine, including nearly 1,000 doctors, more than 600 nurses, 170 paramedics, and 80 pharmacists, according to Health Ministry figures.
